Customer Rating: Summary: a mature masterpiece Comment: This is Kozelek how we always knew he could sound.
The music is floating, down to earth and with a lot of presence.
Even the long pieces are very much to the point.
Duet with Bonnie Prince Billy is very much amazing.
This is a thrilling and captivating record.
Customer Rating: Summary: Another gem from Mr. Kozelek Comment: Quite simply one of the finest American albums of the past few years, well at least since 'Ghosts of the Great Highway". Worth the price for the hauntingly beautiful opening track (Lost Verses) alone. Hypnotic.
Customer Rating: Summary: I'll rewrite this in 10 years Comment: Unlike "Ghosts Of the Great Highway", which I got right away, and "Tiny Cities", which I still haven't gotten, this really has to grow on you. So much so that I bet in 5 years after its hazy sketches are made clearer I might like it even more. But at this point, it's like "Song of Myself" in music, an all-encompassing oneness of sounds (from whisper-plucked hushiness to thud-rock) and styles (some of it calls to mind Native-American folk music and down-home bluegrassy fun). I just don't know where Mark Kozelek is going with this record, it seems all over the map, almost unfocused in light of "Ghosts'" incredible singularity, but maybe that's the point - I don't know. Regardless, some of the melodies are flat-out astounding, and the record has a few moments of ungodly beauty that you just don't hear from anyone these days. After it's over, you feel almost overwhelmed, which might make you smile.
Customer Rating: Summary: Like a fine wine... Comment: Sorry for the cliche, but it is really true. Mark Kozelek just gets better with age. While so many other artists burn out or create sub-par recordings as they go on, Kozelek takes his time and outputs true, thoughtful heartfelt songs. And while other artist's voices give out, I've never heard Kozelek sound better. I can't wait for the next one, and the next one....
Customer Rating: Summary: not his best but good nonetheless Comment: Kozelek goes for a rawer, "live," and more intimate sound this time around and I'm not sure it 100% succeeds. His voice in particular can sound notably ragged at times and on several of the tracks. Having said that, I really enjoy his individualistic style and his interpretation of others' songs. His last 2 CD's were in heavy rotation on my mp3 platyer for 2 years. Perhaps I simply need a rest from his particular style. I'd give it 3.5 stars if amazon let one score in half star increments. His masterpeice as some sayhere? Sorry I cant agree with that.

April, the new album from Sun Kil Moon, is Mark Kozelek's first original record since the acclaimed 2003 Sun Kil Moon debut ''Ghosts Of The Great Highway''. 11 songs at almost 74 minutes, ''April'' is a collection of songs recorded between March and August 2007 in San Francisco (Hyde Street Studios) and Seattle (Well Recording). In the spirit of Sun Kil Moon's ''Ghosts'' and ''Tiny Cities'', Mark was joined by the same players as before, including drummer Anthony Koutsos (Red House Painters), bassist Geoff Stanfield (Black Lab), violist Michi Aceret, and percussionist David Revelli. ''April'' also finds Mark in the company of guest vocalists Bonnie Prince Billy, Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie), and Eric Pollard (Retribution Gospel Choir).
The album will come with a bonus CD featuring four alternate versions of songs from "April".
