Customer Rating: Summary: Robyn Is Not Here Anymore Comment: Robyn's 1st American release, "Robyn Is Here" was not a musical revelation, but her voice was very well-showcased. The songs were melodic, allowing her to begin adding very well executed embelishments on the later verses in each song. The music wasn't overtly intricate, but it was enjoyable over repeated listening because of her excellent vocal individuality and personally sung background vocal arrangements.
This new album is not about Robyn at all, because she is so hidden behind all of the NOISES (not music) that box in her voice. Instead of giving us more true songs to enjoy, we now get 3 verses of rap (which isn't very inspired or ground-breaking), and then we get a chorus that is actually sung in her voice. So which is it? Is she a singer, or a rapper? Can't be all things to all people. By spreading her wings, she has spread herself too thin.
Her producer should be fired. They have overshadowed her talent with today's start-stop broken beats, and chained her voice to singing three notes on each track.
Again, she wasn't the best singer before, but at least she was a singer who showed her excellent ability. Mariah Carey killed her career when she stopped singing, and started note-speaking. Robyn isn't on this album, even though her name is. A whole lotta nothin' and none of Robyn.
Customer Rating: Summary: Where have you been!?! Comment: This is easily the best pop album I've heard in the past decade. I'm not one to make hysterical claims like that, but this album is THAT good.
Words literally escape me in describing how good this CD is. Unfortunately, none of her work in the past several years has been available in the US. Then she bursts on the scene (literally!) with this unbelievable record. Every song is great, even the slower jams.
Let me back up just a little bit. The first two thirds of the album are fast-paced dance tracks or perfect pop confections. The disc opens with Konichiwa Bitches, a catchy, self-promoting dance jam filled with blips and bleeps that almost seems ridiculous until you listen to the rest of the CD where she backs up her claims and then some.
She then launches into high-energy dance tracks (the cover of the Teddybears' jam "Cobrastyle") and radio-friendly pop-dance ("Handle Me" and "Be Mine"). Every track oozes tight production, but not over-production; you can tell Robyn had a hand in crafting every synth-beat of every single song.
To close out the album, she busts out some slow jams ("Robotboy," "Should have Known") that may seem all saccharine at first, but on 2nd and 3rd listen deep emotional meaning surfaces.
If you're a fan of pop and/or dance music, this album is a must have. Think Madonna's Ray of Light album but better; techno beats with heart and deep personal meaning. It has been a very long time since I was this excited about an album from any artist. Buy this, now!!
Customer Rating: Summary: ELECTRIFYING Comment: Robyn is a force to be reckoned with. She hopped on the scene in the late 90's with a sugary pop sound and then kind of drifted away while still releasing CD's in her native country. She is back in the US and the mainstream with her most recent self titled CD: 'Robyn'.
This CD is the best CD I have heard in along time. It has guts, originality and undeniable beats. Heavy on the electronic sound it has hints of pop, R&B and a little rock ("Be Mine"). This CD has energy from start to finish, melodic hooks, great sound effects and hot beats.
If you are looking for something outside the basic pop box and something with originality then this release is for you. It does not diappoint!
Customer Rating: Summary: OOOH, Weee, This is GOOD! Comment: Oooh weee, this is so hot! I'm a VJ at a dance club/bar in Austin, TX, and we received the video for "With Every Heartbeat", a couple of months ago. I'm playing it in high rotation, because it's so good. Interestingly, her vocals on that track are so similar to Kate Bush. There is a lot of emotion and energy in this set of songs. This CD is the poster child for a great pop/dance album. If you compare this to Madonna's latest "Hard Candy", it's not even a fair fight. Robyn's album is so great for a number of reasons. ALL the tracks are great. But here's where she shines: Beneath the pop/dance groove, there is this refreshing vulnerability and directness that one rarely experiences with this type of music. You'll find yourself replaying the CD over and over, because it's so well constructed and so well executed. I'm not a Robyn fan boy, I haven't followed her through her career, and I have no idea what she's been doing for the last 10 years, although I did buy her first album, which was pretty good. But this CD is just the bomb. I was both surprised and exhilarated by what I'm hearing on this CD. It's THAT good.
If you are reading this to determine if you should shell out [...] for this CD, I can guarantee that you'll be so happy with this CD. I'm not going to go through reviewing every song, but if you caught her on Letterman recently, you'd know that: 1. She is a huge talent (I think that Letterman was blown away by her performance of "Cobrastyle", and 2. She probably falls into one of those categories similar to "the best artist you've never heard".
Rarely has an artist made me want to write a glowing review of their music. Take this for what it's worth, but she's the "Bjork" of pop/dance music. I'd give this CD 6 stars if Amazon supported that rating. I just hope she gets a lot of airplay and visibility, because she deserves the recognition and success. I'm doing my part. Her video plays nightly in the bar, and I can tell you, by the audience reaction, this CD is going to be on everyone's short list. Highly recommended.
Customer Rating: Summary: I feel lucky to have found her music, she's got an awesome sound Comment: Robyn is that strange and elusive thing - a pop artist that is creative, catchy, wears well over time, and is almost totally unknown by the general public. Hopefully that last part will change, because Robyn is one of my very favorite pop artists.
She writes her own songs, and you can tell - the lyrics are unusual and creative, and are delivered with conviction and relish. The music pushes the envelope, and in any album of hers, but especially this one, you can see different genres utilized and the evidence of her playing and just having a great time creating something new.
Crash and Burn Girl, With Every Heartbeat, Konichiwa Bitches, and Be Mine are the top standouts on this album, but you won't find any of the tracks annoying or filler. The songs stay fresh and new with every listen, and if you can get a hold of the single of With Every Heartbeat, with all of the remixes, you won't be sorry to have spent the money.
This is a must-buy album for any pop fan, for sure. Get the whole thing and don't bother downloading tracks, you will want it all.

Robin Carlsson--better known as Robyn, the diminutive Swedish fireball who scored a hit with 1997's "Show Me Love"--has slowly but surely made her mark as an international R & B queen. Robyn, her fourth album, is arguably her strongest statement to date, jam-packed with sassy, streetwise lyrics and an array of novel beats and songs. Tracks like "Be Mine" and the playful, upbeat "Konichiwa Bitches" are instant, immaculate pop gems, while "With Every Heartbeat"--which boasts a Royksopp-esque melancholy, sidereal bleeps and rousing strings--is much more dance than R & B. "Who's That Girl" (produced by The Knife) rides an infectious electroclash groove; "Crash and Burn Girl" is a cheerful take on disco; while "Bum Like Me" and "Should Have Known" (which owes a conspicuous debt to Prince) are shiny slower jams that warn against getting hurt by time-wasting men. With the exception of "Eclipse" and "Anytime You Like", Robyn is a delightfully upbeat album, cementing Robyn's reputation as a kick-ass pop diva with some seriously deadly Ninja moves. --Danny McKenna
