Customer Rating: Summary: sophmore slump Comment: he better release a stripped version especially after taking soooo long to release an album after chariot. I knew it would not be as good but this is rubbish compared to chariot more so chariot stripped. It must have been overwhelming as an artist to try to follow his debut album with so many moving songs; but come on this is what is wrong with popular music; overproduced, lifeless, background noise. This has no soul which is what i loved about chariot. The good i now have a cd to give away to my little sister on her birthday.
Customer Rating: Summary: Waited so long for Gavin... Comment: I love Gavin DeGraw's voice!! I was a huge fan of his first cd and couldn't wait for what he was going to put out next.
While I like this one, it's not as good as the first album. I don't know what exactly it is missing, but it's missing something.
My favorite tracks on it are I Want To Thank You and Young Love. Medicate The Kids is fun and catchy.
Customer Rating: Summary: Gavin Degraw, not Chariot Pt. 2 Comment: I, like a few others, have waited about 4 years for the release of this cd. I enjoy Gavin's vocals, and I find his songwriting to be quirky, and relatable. That being said, this cd is not Chariot Pt. 2. It seems as if a lot of people were expecting it to be.
Upon first listen I felt somewhat of a disconnect with Gavin's vocals by the production on this disc. I think he is at his best when the productions are a bit more "raw" and less "pop inspired." Some of the musical introductions are not there on a few songs and things jump right on in rather abruptly. I also felt overall the songs seemed to sound similar, although there is enough distinction for me to not be bored with the disc.
In Gavin's defense, this cd is a sophmore release. I see elements from Chariot that carry over and still let me know it is his style. "Medicate the Kids" is somewhat similar to "Meaning" lyrically in that it is his effort to bring a message to his music. "Next to Me (Wait A Minute Sister)" and "Cheated On Me" take the "Just Friends" style lyrically and have a familiar quirky feel to them.
Album highlights for me were:
Untamed
Young Love
Cop Stop
Next To Me (Wait A Minute Sister)
Cheated On Me
Do not be mistaken. I enjoy this cd the more I listen to it. While it may not be as revolutionary as Chariot was when I first heard it, it is still a good cd that I enjoy playing in my car. I would say it is a bit evolutionary from the first disc. There wasn't a lot of new ground charted, but there was an effort made to retain some of his original sound. I'm okay with that. I am also somewhat biased as a fan so I would recommend his music to anyone that has never listened to it. His craft is catchy and I enjoy it. To fans who have yet to purchase this cd, don't expect Chariot Pt. 2. You will just be disappointed. Appreciate the fact that Gavin has a "new" set of music and take it as a grain of salt.
I wish I could rate it at 3 1/2 stars because I feel the production holds some of the songs back. I'll be seeing you on tour to make up for that! :)
Customer Rating: Summary: Unimpressed Comment: I eagerly awaited Gavin DeGraw's new CD. I could not wait to buy it and play it, and when i did i was very unimpressed. All the songs have the same beat, i felt like i was listening to the first CD via the music, the only thing different was the lyrics. All the songs(Except for the don't do drugs song) have either, my girl loves me, my girl left me, my dream girl, my girl and I had fight, etc., Very disappointed.
Customer Rating: Summary: A place to be warm and welcome Comment: "'cause the heart can't erase once it finds a place to be warm and welcome,
To be held in shelter" - lyrics from "In Love with a Girl"
Way back in 2003, I reported that Gavin DeGraw's debut CD Chariot was the best album you'd never heard of. Fast forward to 2008 to his second studio album, and although he's a lot more popular now, this is probably the best album you've heard only one song from.
That song is "In Love with a Girl", the first single, but by no means the only good track on the album. DeGraw's easy-listening melodies and simple arrangements make for timeless songs that will still be current in years to come.
This very talented young man writes his own songs, and also plays piano and guitar, and I strongly encourage you to check out the following songs.
Next to You (Wait a Minute Sister)
Cheated on me
Young Love
She Holds a Key
Untamed
Let it Go
Not that the other tracks aren't extremely good, but these are the ones that stand out, and the ones I think are single-worthy. There are no filler tracks on this album, which can be listened to anytime, anywhere and often. I rather think that DeGraw's time under the radar is coming to an end.
Also recommended for Maroon 5 and Jason Mraz fans.
