Summary: Left me hungry for more... That's a GOOD thing!
Comment: Like many people, I've been a Breeders fan since I heard Canonball.
I always thought Last Splash was a great album. Then I heard Pod, which just hit me as a classic!

After buying Title TK (and loving it), I came to the conclusion that the "real" Breeders weren't really about fast-paced alternative power-pop and radio-friendly songs (like Canonball) as I had initially thought. They're much better than that and Mountain Battles proves it.

The minimalistic approach to songwriting and playing makes the songs on this album very concise and bare. They are melody in its most concentrated form, so I'm a little surprised by reviewers claiming that there is no melody. It's so stripped of everything superfluous that all that's left IS melody. Yes it's lethargic, and no, it's not for everyone, and especially not for those expecting another "Last Splash".

I did have to a listen to it a few times to appreciate it, and I now feel that it's the best Breeders album since Pod. I just love the song "Spark". The album is a natural, positive evolution from Title TK.

It leaves me wanting more, in a positive way, like a great movie you don't want to see end.

Kim Deal's songwriting genius is at a peak, and yes... she's cool.

Summary: Fabulosisimo
Comment: I am so stoked about Mountain Battles. The music is better than I could have hoped. I know this is crazy but I put off buying Last Splash for some reason and then realized a few months ago that I must have it When I called to inquire about a used copy, the place told me they had a new album coming out. What a pleasant surprise. And they were touring to boot! (By the way, the show was really fantastic.)
About the album: I agree that it took me a while to get into it, but I absolutely love it. All of the songs have their redeeming qualities, save Regalame Esta Noche. It just seems a bit awkward. But the other songs are fantastic. When I'm listening to it, I have a hard time deciding which song to start on. Very difficult to choose, but here are my top five favorite: It's the Love, No Way, Night of Joy, Bang On, Overglazed. My only criticism is that the album art is terrible. I think it does not go at all with the album. I'm sorry, when I think of "Mountain Battles," it doesn't have a darn thing to do with glass.

Summary: 5 yrs too late, but i'm still happy!
Comment: the deal sisters do it again. such restrained beauty and lyricism.

they combine some elements from TITLE TK -- the restraint and spareness, the abilty to make important what has been peeled back and revealed, the wheat from the chaffe. they also weave in the hookier, more melodic vocals into this mix that were prominent on the earlier songs, throw in overdubs, and a tough of gloss.

most importantly, they still take risks.

kudos to the crazy twins. they take some of the more hyped indie bands to the wood pile with this one. listen up youngsters!

Summary: Complete awful rubbish
Comment: I saw a free Breeders concert at Waterloo Park here in Austin during SXSW and thought they were pretty good. They played alot of songs I hadn't heard before and at the time I didn't know they had a new album comming out. I decided to get Mountain Battles to give it a try. They're playing at Emo's tomorrow night and thought I'll listen to the album to see if they're worth paying $19.50 for. This album is awful. It sounds uninspired and boring and it makes me ask the question why did the two sisters even get back together to write an all new album if they didn't have any good ideas. No songs are good on this at all. Awful music and awful lyrics. This album has absolutly no substance to it. I will not be at The Breeders show tomorrow night (which is good because I'm broke).
Pod and Last Splash are classics. A Calssic this is not.

Comment: I am about the most die hard Pixies fan there is... I've seen them perhaps 10+ times.... I've also seen their solo progress evolve... BOTH KICK ARSE!!!!......They are both BRILLIANT in their own right..... Ok.... So I bought both "Mountain Battles" and "Seven Fingers" at the same time..... I have to say.... First Impression.....Kim is kickin' major arse!!!..

Who is better???!!! Frank or Kim?? Paul or John????

What a great night!!!...

Editorial Reviews:

Their first album since 2002's "Title TK". By turns goofy, groovy, melancholy, strung-out, catchy, atmospheric, and at times, impossibly lovely, "Mountain Battles" underlines that Kim Deal is a songwriter and musician of rare intuition. Her songs move from offhand charm to emotional truth with casual grace, balancing scuffed-up noise against fraught silence; timeless structures against strange new shapes. And throughout is Kim's unique voice - languid, urgent, bruised, and beautiful. "Mountain Battles" captures all the bittersweet electricity of classic Breeders records like "Pod" and "Last Splash", and still manages to break new ground. Deluxe 28-page booklet with both formats. Look for appearances at SXSW, Coachella, and Bonnaroo, and a national tour upon release, followed by a fall tour.
