Summary: Keep growing!
Comment: I like this album. Most of the songs were good, not mind blowers like some that she has had in the past. I really like 4 songs on the album, the rest are just ok. My favorite Badu album is Mama's Gun.

I think that Erykah took her leanings to be more experimental and merged them with what her traditional (Baduizm) fans would like to hear. But I say she should follow her inclinations and see where they lead. I did not like every song on the album, but I don't have that expectation. If artist don't change and test the market then they will never grow. Instead of people complaining that her album is not the "same Erykah"... they will compain that it's the "same old Erykah". Artist have to complete a project and then they have to sing the same songs at hundreds of events during a year and sometimes for years if the song becomes a hit. So just like everyone else has asperations to grow, improve, and incorporate change into their jobs... I would say that it is reasonable for artists to feel the same way.

Therefore, I would recommend the album, but only to those that listen to something other than the same old stuff you hear on the radio - traditional R&B and traditional "Neo-Soul". Neo-Soul was new over 10 years ago. She was one of the pioneers then, I think she will continue to be a leader in bringing us new music, if we let her.

Summary: True Erykah
Comment: You definitely have to be a true Badu fan to get with this one. Not as good as her live album, but it eventually grows on you.

Summary: If your ears are only suited for Soulja Boy/Girl, Lil Jon, and such . . .
Comment: then you may not appreciate what sistah is doing here. Ms. Badu and her New Amerykah is trying to do something new, using underground producers and entering mathematics to her sounds equation. Some will say that she is out there with her politcally charged lyrics with some wicked bump, that it needs to sound like her past stuff or at least like the sounds on your HOT/BLAZING radio station, but if you can, get this and grow your mind. As Erykah says in Twinkle, "They take what they are given, even when it feels Odd."

I can listen to the whole thing without skipping. It kept me interested. NOTE: If you don't know or not a fan of Georgia Ann Muldrow's music, you may not like Master/Teacher. Ms. Muldrow is knows for going against that damn grain.

My faves: The Cell, Twinkle, Telephone, Honey (very last joint, ya gotta wait for the countdown to end to hear it) Soldier and The Healer.

Summary: True Erykah Badu
Comment: I've loved all her albums and this one is no different. Nearly every track is dope. I only wish there was 1 or 2 more slow ones like Telephone.

Summary: Doesn't live up to the potential and promise it's built upon
Comment: The Quick & Dirty:
Badu's "New Amerykah, Pt. 1: 4th World War" takes hip-hop loops, slight touches of neo-soul stylings and 5 percenter rhetoric and let's it marinate for a while...but once done never garnishes the dish.

The Lowdown:
I have all the respect in the world for Ms. Badu, for through her eccentricities and hippie mentality there shines the soul of a true artist and musical visionary. Unfortunately, her instrument is her voice. Now, she can without a doubt hold her own, but she is forever at the mercy of her producers. On "New Amerykah..." this is painfully evident. Her vocal talents are mired under production that is at first jarringly different, colorful, even refreshing; however, once the novelty wears off, the listener is left with not much substance, just repetitive, monochrome stylings. Lyrically, the album is mostly a mess, with cryptic, nonsensical ramblings filling in for real substance and meaning. It's as if she wants so bad to be heard, relevant and/or revolutionary that she overcompensates with confusing and hollow sentiments. Note to Ms. Badu: true revolution is simplicity (check Marvin's What's Going On, Mercy Mercy Me, What's Happening Brother, et al).

The Bottom Line:
This project is an interesting first listen. But, once past the novelty, the reality is seen: "New Amerykah..." is a tremendous waste of potential and promise.

Editorial Reviews:

Universal Motown's multi-platinum-selling, Grammy awardwinning singer/songwriter/actress Erykah Badu returns to the music scene with her new album "New Amerykah" featuring the debut single "Honey". Laced with Erykah's bluesy grit and MC style vocals, the song is bolstered by producer's 9th Wonder's razor sharp hip hop beats. Badu describes the song as "an old school track with some funk on it." The release of "Honey" on November 20th also marks Badu's 10th year in the music industry. To celebrate, the gifted trendsetter prepares the release of her much anticipated new album on her birthday, February 26th. Badu has enlisted some of the most talented, groundbreaking underground producers and engineers in the hip-hop game to support her breakthrough return, including Grammy Award winning producer 9th Wonder (Jay-Z, Nas, Mary J. Blige), Madlib, Mike "Chav" Chavarria and R&B singer Bilal. A special, 12-inch pink wax edition will be available only to DJ's next month and will feature underground tracks, "The Healer" and "Real Thang." "The music is the star," says Erykah, "I just laid down my vocals and let the music breathe while the melodies tell the stories." This album is part one of the series New Amerykah Part 1&2.
