Customer Rating: Summary: Mostly She Comment: If you liked Zooey D singing "Baby Its Cold Outside" in the movie Elf, you should love this album and hope that there will be more Volumes to come.
Customer Rating: Summary: Yikes Comment: Zooey Deschanel appears to have made a conscious effort to rid her voice of all originality and character. And to sing in an awkward, straining voice. Her turn on "Baby It's Cold Outside" on the Elf soundtrack proves she's got a nice voice. I knew I should have listen to all of the clips before I bought this.
Customer Rating: Summary: She and Him are perfect together Comment: When I bought this Cd I was already a big fan of m. ward. I have watched Zooey in her movies never saw her sing in elf. When I started to listen to her voice stood out, with the help of ward she should develope into a good singer with a oldies flare.
I wouldn't say that her voice is angelic but its got a smoothness to it that I can't describe. I can't see her doing any different kind of music with that voice it fits perfect in what m. ward does. Her lyrics are great for someone who has never performed before.
I would of liked to hear a little more of m. ward on the record but i can deal with that. The songs he does sing on are great their voices harmonize perfectley together. This Cd has an old-timey flare to with the way she sings and the lyrics. This is folk music at its best. If you are fan of m. ward pick up a copy or are looking for something different this is it.
Customer Rating: Summary: Understated folk-pop with a rich sense of tradition Comment: "Volume 1" is a lovely first offering from the pairing of M(att) Ward and Zooey Deschanel. The duo came about in an unsurprising way : M Ward saw "Elf" and (like the rest of us) was surprised to find Zooey didn't have an off-film musical career.
She & Him know their strengths and keep it simple. This is not an album of serious, thought-provoking songs. It is pleasant, playful, sing-alongable collection of originals and covers. Zooey's vocals are reminiscent of classic female singer/songwriters of the sixties and seventies (Carly Simon, Rita Coolidge, and Loretta Lynn come to mind), rich and mellow, a little dusky. M. Ward's contributions are less obvious: instrumentation, as well as backing vocals on the latter half of the album.
"Volume 1" is not brilliant - and you never get the sense that She & Him want it to be. It's the kind of album that calls for summer evenings, back porches and a glass of wine - not a magnifying glass.
Customer Rating: Summary: AWESOME! Comment: I love this CD I listen to it daily! It's awesome! Best CD I have ever bought!

This is the musical debut from M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel, paired together by director Martin Hayens to perform the Richard and Linda Thompson tune "When I Get To The Border" for his film "The Go-Getter". Their match sparked the idea for "Volume One". Limited touring this spring.
