Customer Rating: Summary: 5 star you bet Comment: all of his work is 5 star!!! even back in the 70's i felt that way. every time i listen it brings back some fond memories of that era. he was truly very good!!
Customer Rating: Summary: A gem of an album .... Comment: from a guitar great who died too young. Tommy Bolin was undoubtedly one of the finest rock guitarists in a decade that saw many.I was first exposed to his work when I got James Gang's "Bang" and then hearing his work with Deep Purple as Ritchie blackmore's replacement. This album has some of his best work, I believe. "Post Toastee" was the song that hooked me and made me want this album back in '76. Upon hearing "Shake The Devil" and "Bustin Out For Rosey" after my purchase I knew I was listening to something special. All the songs are good(IMHO)and this disc is a must have for admirers of his work or anyone who just wants to hear some great guitar.
Customer Rating: Summary: High order of rhythm Comment: One thing that sets Tommy Bolin apart from many of the other known guitar players of his time (and even today) is his use of binary and ternary rhythm. The way he would mix the two is amazing. When you work out solos of today. Many are so even and concerned with flash. Rhythm is key! His love for many styles gave his music an edge that will last for as long as were here. Check out Teaser, Bang, Spectrum, Come Taste The Band, Mind Transplant, Live At Ebbets Field June 3 and 4, 1974. He helped to introduce me to world music and for that I'm very thankful.
Customer Rating: Summary: Who mastered this audio jem???? Comment: Am I the only reviewer to relish in the AUDIO NIRVANA of this well produced and handsomely mastered jewel????
Here's the deal........The audio CD is a technical marvel originally appreciated by most (when first invented back in the early 80's) for it's ability to produce DYNAMIC music. By that I mean the Compact Disc was created as a medium superior to ALL others to reproduce the subtle, sensitive, and quieter moments so cherished by anyone human; while almost simultainiously it's talent to blast out the very loud, raucus, angry moments of sonic delight so cherished by anyone human!!
That being said, things have changed much over the past decade or so in a VERY BAD WAY: The sound of most newly mastered CD's are mostly awful! They are now hugely compressed, (greatly diminishing dynamics) I guess to be louder for radio programmers, although ALL CD's brodcast for radio or TV are compressed anyway to the point of ZERO dynamic range.....
My point being, especially when "re-mastered" (read...."destroyed" in many cases) CD's are dumped on the market almost exclusively as a marketing tool to sell older catalog. Re-masterd CD's now-a-days are so over compressed that almost all dynamic range is gone. Worse, since the CD's now are mastered SO LOUD, that actual distortion occurs (and believe me, ANY digital distortion is unlistenable; unlike analog distortion where distortion can be fun and exciting........distorted guitar anyone?!?!?!). But the almost undectable distortion is only on some of the peaks and valleys of the sound wave that it is consciously virtually undetectable. However, the resulting sound, after already being over-compressed, now takes on a more harsh, less pleasing tone.
I myself just recently realized this phenomenon in all it's glory....with Aerosmith. Their earlier Columbia stuff sound o.k...... "Toys In The Attic", "Rocks".... it's mastering is acceptable, but maybe mixed just a little too loudly.
But their Geffen releases......"Permanent Vacation", "Get a Grip", and especially "Pump" ...sound MUCH better. The mastering has big bass (my fave), detailed and smoother mids and highs. These Geffen CD's are warm and pleasing to listen to LOUD!!! I have 500 watts per side through JBL 4623s (horn, 8" mid, and 15' woofer!).
However !! And here is the rub........Aerosmith's newest records on SONY......("Nine Lives", and the newest and most notable pop release "Just Push Play".......are so terribly over done in their mastering that I can barely listen to em! sounds like a chain saw buzzing throughout. .......NOT warm; very harsh and fatiguing to listen to.......Just what I've been saying.
BUT!! This Tommy Bolin "Private Eyes" CD sounds like heaven!!!! HUGE bass throughout , very warm and pleasing to my ears....crisp without being harsh....if I want it loud, I will just turn up my system and the cops will show before my coffee's even ready!
WHOEVER mastered this CD is a genius..........! does anyone know who mastered this awesome CD?
Please email me with any responses.....thank you. barrysmith_2001@yahoo.com
Customer Rating: Summary: What would he be doing now? Comment: I have been a fan of Tommy Bolin since right after he died. I had a chance to go to his show at the Palace Theater in Albany NY on his last tour (recorded for King Biscuit Flower Hour), but didn't go because at the time I had no idea who he was. Although one of the most talented and diverse guitar player/songwriter/singers I have ever heard, his life was marred by drug abuse and scorn from fans who hated the fact that he replaced Joe Walsh in the James Gang and Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Private Eyes is one of my favorites, because it mixes hard rock tunes with softer ballads and really showcases his amazing vocal talents. He almost hired a singer to record his first solo album; what a disgrace that would have been. Tommy's vocal talents were almost as good as his incredible guitar work. If you're on the fence about buying this album, grab it and enjoy the ride. I wonder what incredible music he would have been creating for the last 30 years.
