Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Glad Carlene Didn't Wait Longer For "STRONGER"! :) Comment: Carlene Carter IS "Stronger" . . . and she appropriately named this album of her new music (as well as the title song) "STRONGER" -- (what doesn't kill me makes me stronger" is the theme) . . . Carlene hasn't put out any new records since 1996 (so you can do the math) . . . but this new cd presents Carlene as good as she ever was (and she has always been great!) and even better . . . Her lyrics are in many instances quite thoughtful and inspiring . . .and her singing and delivery and performance can be as rowdy and rockin' as ever! Carlene's music (both her older previous recordings as well as this newest) remind us of just how great music really was and can still be . . . and listening to it is a little like looking through some old photographs and recognizing what it was that first dazzled and bedazzled us and "bringing it all back home" again . . . Carlene comes across our cd player speakers with so much personality and presence and so much that is "real" that she and her artistry stand head & shoulders above the rest . . . Every track on this album is pure Carlene and pure musical magic . . . but my personal favorite is "SPIDER LACE" for it poetic lyric lines and mountain stream melodic sound. Evoking the rock-a-billy rock of Buddy Holly (to my ear) is "BREAK MY LITTLE HEART" . . . . . . And of course, the title track: "STRONGER" which describes Carlene's present life-view: that she's IS stronger . . . life's hard blows may knock one down but we only rise up stronger for them . . . a reminder any and all of us could use. Thank You Carlene Carter for this newest contribution of songs and music from your treasure chest of talents . . . such marvelous magical melodies . . . and they make us look forward to many many more still to come. :) Customer Rating: Summary: What a Great Comeback for Carlene! Comment: Great album! Not a bad song on it. What's cool about it is she seems to "borrow" from her old styles - whether it be her early years with her first ex, Nick Lowe, producing her; her chart topping country years of the early and mid-90's; and the harmonies and traditional feel of her mom and the Carter family - creating a beautiful record that sounds fresh and new. Considering all that has happened to her over the past few years we are certainly blessed to have her back stronger than ever, with what should be considered a career album for her. Customer Rating: Summary: 2 and-a-half stars really Comment: It's great to have Carlene Carter releasing music again. This disc is very professionally done, contains a couple of very good songs and finds Ms. C in fine voice. But, to my ears the music is just a little too professionally performed. I would like to hear a little more "edge", a little more energy to the tunes. Perhaps I just prefer Carlene in more of a rock context. Hopefully we'll hear more from her in the near future. Customer Rating: Summary: Take THIS, you "Now That's What I Call Music" dudes!!! Comment: Totally unexpected, I went back and revisited my old Carlene Carter albums via recent CD releases, when I heard Ms. Carter was going to release a new record after more than a decade of silence. I have always loved her I FELL IN LOVE and LITTLE LOVE LETTERS albums, and despite the good reviews of STRONGER, I didn't think Carlene could possbibly beat those, but I took a chance. Boy, am I glad I did. After years in the wilderness and tragic personal losses, this new CD turns out to be anything but morose. It may be a bit darker, but this woman still knows how to rock. You know how most female vocalists, particularly songwriters, front load their albums with a couple of fast tracks and then spend most of their time on the ballads? Carter is the opposite. Her ballads are drop-dead gorgeous, as is "To Change Your Heart," heard here. It made me want to have a good cry, it's so lovely. But most of this album makes me want to dance. As usual, it's the rockers Carlene seems to have the most fun with, especially on "The Bitter End" and an update of her own "I'm So Cool" ... and yet when she relaxes into mid-tempo, like she does on the melodic "Spider Lace," I go into another realm completely. This may be the prettiest song Carter has ever sung. She doesn't stay in this space for long though, and that's why the track stands out and lingers in the memory. It's old-fashioned with a modern sheen; it simply sparkles. Following is a bluesy rocker that could have come from 1982 called "On To You," with its combination of seventies fuzz-guitar and eighties Oingo-Boingo-type beat. "Judgement Day," although a slow one, still has a heavy drum backing. It's my least favorite track on this CD, but others reviewing STRONGER for Amazon find it one of their favorites, so the listener will decide. The pace picks up again for a typical C. C. fast two-step, "Break My Little Heart In Two." Rock, but country, too -- without an annoying, fake twang, and with a kicky beat. The song, "It Takes One To Know One" has all the elements of a great country ballad: a lilting melody, steely guitars and dobros, and completely captivating singing. Carlene has never sounded better. The goose bumps were quick to come on this first listen. The last two songs bring the CD in for a strong close: a medium-paced rocker, "light Of Your Love," followed by the title tune. The lady knows how to save the one that packs an emotional wallop for last. This eulogy for her younger sister is heartbreaking in its beauty, and yes, it still manages to be life-affirming and positive. You know her heart is broken, but she is going to survive. If this one doesn't move you, check your blood pressure. Customer Rating: Summary: She's back! Comment: This CD has been in my car CD player for the last few weeks. My favorite tracks are The Bitter End, To Change Your Heart, and Judgement Day. I can't say enough about her talent as a singer and song writer! Editorial Reviews: As part of country music royalty (the daughter of June Carter Cash and Carl Smith and step daughter to Johnny Cash) Carlene Carter has seen both the ups and downs of the music business and life. She's lived as the daughter of a legend and had her family chronicled in Hollywood films (Walk the Line). She's seen the dark side of fame and struggled with addiction, all the while holding onto the grace and class emboldened deep family roots. Inspired by her life experiences, 'Stronger' is a raw but touching recollection of her life of the past few years. Years that included the wrenching sorrow of the sudden death of her stepfather, mother, sister and ex-lover. Also in that same year she experienced the euphoria of meeting and falling in love with the cowboy of her dreams. On her latest work 'Stronger,' family roots have intertwined with her musical roots, seeing Carlene return to Tennessee to record and prompting her to work closely with brother John Carter Cash. Her recent emotional peaks and valleys have also inspired Carlene to write the bulk of the material on Stronger, making for her most honest, real and moving work to date.
