Summary: Disco Meets 70s Space Rock
Comment: I was intrigued by the sound clips of this album and I like the CD too. These guys have a sound that at times is blatantly disco, other times is like space rock and sometimes like 90s alt rock. One song, "Of Moons, Birds & Monsters", has a guitar solo reminiscent of Hendrix's solo in All Along The Watchtower. Overall I find the album pretty satisfying on repeated listening, although I doubt I'll be listening to it 4 months from now. It's easygoing and sometimes (the disco times) outright fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, but isn't completely silly either. If you like the sound clips you'll probably like this CD just as much.

Summary: Not bad, not bad...
Comment: Ok, so I am more of a Justin Timberlake kind of guy, but I do like some techno and dance as well. I was surprised by Oracular Spectacular because all-in-all, there was some decent tracks on here. It's not something where I think the entire CD was worth it, but about 3 of the tracks I did enjoy. I would suggest that this album is for people who are more into the alternative scene than electronic pop.

Summary: Neo-psychedelic Fun: ***1/2
Comment: I've heard complaints about the "overproduction" of this album, but that doesn't bother me. After all, overproduction has a long tradition in rock going all the way back to Phil Spector. Many of the "progressive rock" bands, like Yes and the Moody Blues, specialized in multi-layered opuses. Even today there are bands that are heirs apparent to that style, like Flaming Lips, Polyphonis Spree, and Arcade Fire. This band does "overproduction" quite well, and they definitely put across the image of a neo-hippie, hedonistic lifestyle. Just watch their hyper-psychedelic video of "Time to Pretend" and you'll know where their heads are at, as they used to say back in the `60's. That leadoff track gets the album off to a joyous start, and even if you don't subscribe to the drug-culture lifestyle they seem to espouse (sardonically or otherwise - this song is probably one of the factors that earned them an "explicit lyrics" label), you have to admit it's a fun and freewheeling track. In fact, there's a lot of bohemian fun and loose song structure throughout this album, infused with some often "retro" engineering tricks. Another standout track is "Electric Feel", where they lay down one of the funkiest '70's-style grooves I've heard in some time. The energy level seems to flag a little in the latter half, but overall it's an enjoyable, if rather lightweight album, the kind you'll like to play on your car stereo on a warm spring day with the windows down.

Summary: Refreshingly Different!
Comment: I'm very glad I downloaded that single of the week on itunes. This is a great band, but they aren't for everyone. They have a different sound to them. It's a mix of electronic music and 70's-80's music, but it's fantastic! I LOVE the song "Kids" and "Time To pretend". Their music is extremely catchy.

Summary: COOL SOUNDS EVOKE MIXED REFERENCES -- GREAT MOVIE MUSIC
Comment: I had never heard of this group. My first impression was pretty good and after hearing them for a bit I started to like them a lot more.

I know nothing of their musical background or how they came together, but to my ears, it made me think a little bit of techno and Abba with a hint of a retro calypso vibe. I know it sounds weird, but that's the first thing that came to mind.

Their aptly named "Oracular Spectacular" is just that. A treat for jaded ears and worth getting to know.

What a great soundtrack they could create for a movie! Be it thriller, romance or adventure. When I hear the music I see images. And that's good.
