Customer Rating: Summary: Somehow It Works Comment: When I first heard about this project, I thought it was the most insane idea I ever heard of. Who in their right mind would put themselves in competition with Judy Garland, song for song in one of her most famous stage appearances? At best, I thought it would be a sort of campy misfire. But somehow it all works. Once you get past his vocal limitations, this is quite an enjoyable experience. No one can compete with Garland's voice and Rufus doesnt try to compete with her. And to my surprise he does a good job, even with some missteps here and there (one mistake is deliberate, as Judy made the same mistake in her concert). Will you like it? I dont know. I'm a fan of both performers and I'd recommend this to anyone. At worst it'll make you want to buy/listen to the original which isnt a bad thing. It's a Wainwright family affair with Lorna Luft as a bonus Garland connection. I also recommend the DVD version which is even better as it has some extra encores on it. Bless Rufus' gay little heart!
Customer Rating: Summary: Rufus is as Rufus does Comment: Rufus Wainright is no Judy Garland. But once you get that image (and sound) out of your head, there are some wonderful moments on this "cover" of an entire unforgettable concert. Rufus continually amazes me with his musicality, vocal range, impertinence, audacity, and sheer talent. Still, I had to work at hearing him on this recording. The original is so indelibly imprinted on my soul. But the effort was worth the effort, and reaffirms my love affair with this amazing artist. I highly recommend this recording - just don't expect a Judy imitation. It's Rufus all the way, and he is equally unique in what he delivers.
Customer Rating: Summary: Poor Rufus One Note Comment: Mr. Wainwright maybe an exellent performer when sticking to his own stuff - but this homage - or whatever it is supposed to be - is just terrible. I have to agree with what has already been said in many reviews. I don't want to be harshly, but ... the voice is just - well, there is no voice... And the guy seems to be so stoned (or just overly relaxed??) it's really painful to listen to him. And trying to disguise one of his many lyrik-flops with stopping the orchestra because he allegedly wants the music "a dash" faster is - in my opinion not funny but rather unprofessional. His sister and his mother sound OK, but not spectacular, and although Lorna Luft concentrates too much on being loud she comes off as the only one suited for that kind of material.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wow! Comment: A brilliant concept followed through with a remarkable delivery! This remarkable artist has dared to think big and with a confidence that Judy herself would have demonstrated. This is an album that will referenced for years to come. I only wish I could have been at Carnegie Hall on the night it was recorded.
Judy would have loved it!
Customer Rating: Summary: Gifted Artist, Wrong Genre Comment: Rufus Wainwright is a fantastic singer/song-writer, and his self-titled debut, Release The Stars, and Poses are absolutely fantastic compilations. However, the one difference between those and his efforts with Judy standards, is that on his own discs, he's in his own genre, and his voice and style is effortless, flowing, and poignant. Here, in the jazzy, vocal genre of Judy Garland, his voice and style doesn't always find such a smooth niche.
There are a few gems on the disc, such as "How Long Has This Been Going On", where his easy, lilting vocals suit the song quite well, and "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", where he infuses pure emotion into every note. Many of the slower, more ballad-type songs that fall into that same easy-listening feel, such as his version of "Rock A Be Your Baby With A Dixie Melody", he does quite well, as they suit his style very well.
But more than anything else, his voice clashes horribly with the rest. "The Man That Got Away" is reduced to a tinny, whining sort of rendition, instead of the full-throated brazen version that Judy prefected. "Zing! Went The Strings of My Heart", "You Made Me Love You", and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" (in which he showcased his amazingly annoying ability to "scoop" into any and all of the higher notes), were also reduced to a very whining, tinny sort of rendition, perhaps because on a great many of the middle-range notes that are held over, Wainwright pulls the notes from the back of his nose, which doesn't do the songs any justice, and really, given Judy's full-throated originals, are quite unecessary covers. In fact, given Judy's amazing come-back performance in Carnegie Hall so many years prior, I don't know why he bothered with the concert at all, except for publicity and money's sake.
Wainwright's such an amazing performer and song-writer in his own right, and any of his other discs are well worth purchasing. This one, however, with it's unecessary covers of such great vocal classics, I would pass over, or simply buy one or two of the tracks.

RUFUS WAINWRIGHT - RUFUS DOES JUDY AT CARNEGIE HALL - CD ALONG WITH A 36-PIECE ORCHESTRA RE-CREATES JUDY GARLAND'S CELEBRATED 1961 CARNEGIE HALL CONCERT SONG-FOR-SONG On June 14, 2006, Rufus Wainwright took to the stage to recreate "the Greatest Show of All Time ever staged in honor of the Greatest Show of All Time"--Judy Garland's legendary 1961 concert at Carnegie Hall; song-for-song, in its original venue. Garland fanatics feared a fiasco, but the show was a triumph. His sophisticated act of homage to his hero was both a loving tribute and an arch commentary on the original, featuring classics like "Over The Rainbow," "Come Rain Or Come Shine" and "Zing! Went The Strings Of My Heart." Backed by a 36-piece orchestra and arranged by the Broadway famed Stephen Oremus (Wicked, Avenue Q), Rufus's vocal talent soars over those classic melodies on this 2-disc set.
