Summary: Drift away with Roy
Comment: This DVD should be in every home in America. And Canada. And wherever they have DVD players with surround sound systems. I am doing my part, sending it to those I know and love. You never get tired of it and is the perfect backdrop for any social event, whether for two or many.

Summary: Don't miss "A Black & White Night"
Comment: A DVD not to be missed! I pull it out and watch it every month or so. Great Roy Orbison music with outstanding performances by big name musicians. One of the best things is that all the performers are thoroughly enjoying being part of the production. I'm glad it is part of my small collection. Money well spent. Buy it, you won't be sorry.

Summary: Roy Orbison Sings His Best with Some Famous Backups
Comment: I was a teenager in the late fifties when Roy Orbison came on the scene and have been a fan ever since. Singing some of the songs that make both women and men cry, Roy was at his best. This concert video was shot in a night club with only Roy's invited guests in attendance. It was especially pleasing to see the members of his band; Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, T-bone Burnett, Tom Waits, Jackson Browne, and others. His backup singers included T.J. Lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raite among others. The audio quality was excellent but typical of live performance videos. The black and white imagery was limited to closeups of the performers faces with their intruments. The concert was produced on line, that is, it was produced and done as a live telvision broadcast and there were some switching errors with digital gitches between camera shots. Some of the mistakes were covered up cosmetically in post production with shots from a wandering camera. I am forgiving of a lot of the technical shortcomings since this production was done in 1999 when digital hd production was in its infancy. There were moments that the production looked amateurish. However, a lot could have been done in post in the editing room to improve the product. I am qualified to critique the technical aspects of this production having worked on a number of live productions in my forty year career in broadcasting. All in all, Orbison was fantastic, the guest performers were fun, and overall I would give the production a four out of five stars. Had the production had been a little more polished and free of glaring mistakes, I would have given it a five.

Editorial Reviews:

Few early rockers were more gifted or less honored in their prime than the late Roy Orbison, whose vaulting tenor and vulnerable love songs conjured heartbreak and desire with operatic intensity. This 1987 concert special, originally broadcast on Showtime, came two decades after Orbison had retreated from pop's front lines, yet neither Orbison nor his music coasts on mere nostalgia: in every respect, A Black and White Night survives as a triumphant performance and a superb video production, as well as a first-rate retrospective of Orbison's hits.

Filmed in black and white against the streamlined art deco stage of the since-demolished Coconut Grove in downtown Los Angeles, the concert is buoyed by a remarkable cast of A-list Orbison fans who signed on as his accompanists. Under the direction of producer T-Bone Burnett, the stage band thus includes Jackson Browne, Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, and Jennifer Warnes, along with the rhythm section from Elvis Presley's fabled late '60s and early '70s touring band. That astonishing lineup is all the more noteworthy for the restraint with which they collaborate--it's evident that those superstars came to honor Orbison, not upstage him, resulting in a gratifying cohesion to the performances.

Orbison himself sounds as powerful as ever, his soaring falsetto cresting as dramatically as it did on the studio versions of the hits that inevitably dominate. Those songs meanwhile confirm that his blue chip admiration society came as much for the caliber of his writing as for his ravishing voice: if he remains best known for the jaunty come-on of "Pretty Woman," Orbison was first and foremost a rock balladeer, capable of bringing lumps to our throats with such classics as "Crying" and "Only the Lonely," or conjuring romantic trances through such gentle charmers as "Dream Baby." On this night, he handled all of them with fervor and finesse. --Sam Sutherland
