Customer Rating: Summary: Beautiful voice, beautiful instrumentals Comment: I picked this up on a whim, but I'm quickly falling in love with it. My favorite is "Babydoll." The background music is complex, and the lyrics are sweet. Fans of the Dixie Chicks will recognize the last song on this CD, which Wilson apparently wrote for them.
Customer Rating: Summary: Warning! Comment: Warning: Free Life will get in your head and you will not be able to play anything else! Very rich multi layers of music will sing to your mind, body and soul. Dan Wilson has the most appealing voice and wonderful lyrics. He has a very unique and creative way of looking at life; he is very original. I had to google him and find out about him and could not believe that he wants to sound like Neil Young. As much as I loved Neil Young as a teenager (and listened to his albums exclusively at one point) I find Dan Wilson much more appealing, fresh and vibrant. I also had no idea he was in Semisonic - Closing Time was one of the few songs on the radio that appealed to me when I was driving my teenage kids/car pool around - it certainly took me back to my youth! If you are feeling stale and unspired about life and need a dose of something to rev you up again, buy this album . It will definitely energize your soul and maybe even make you fall in love again - at least with music and the person you used to be. It brings a freshness to your life and makes you view the people and world that surround you in a new light - or maybe it reawakens what was already there.
Customer Rating: Summary: Beautiful and Catchy Comment: I bought this album on impulse after hearing the artist interviewed on Bob Edwards Weekend. I wasn't familiar with Dan or Semisonic before then, but the snippets they played on air and Dan's discussion of not multi-tracking and allowing the vocals to carry the melody sold me.
It was a great buy and is a great addition to my collection. I think Dan has a terrific voice, I love the melodies here, I appreciate the spare arrangements he used, and I think the lyrics are interesting and noteworthy. Put this all together, and you end up with a compelling and unusual combination: pretty deep music that is still really catchy.
It's not that often that I find music I think is intelligent and so easy to sing along with, too. Free Life is the total package and is easily my favorite new album from 2007.
Customer Rating: Summary: Beautiful music Comment: If you liked Semisonic, you will LOVE this CD. Beautifully written songs, performed by a true artist.
Customer Rating: Summary: Quintessential Dan Wilson Comment: It's always a challenge to compare a solo artist's new work to that of his previous work in a band -- in this case, Semisonic. Many times, you can't help but pine a bit for the "then" when listening to the "now." Dan Wilson's new effort is no less a case of this, but the carefully crafted songs on FREE LIFE certainly aren't hurt by Wilson's half-step away from the Semisonic sound. There is some real beauty to Wilson's songwriting. There always has been. And while no song seems to break the bank, "All Kinds" is the smooth, melodic gem that seems most capable of carrying the album. FREE LIFE is everything that Wilson's career has seemed to be - an understated gift.

Say the name Dan Wilson, and it might not inspire the immediate recognition deserved by a celebrated songwriter who has lent his fertile pen to the likes of the Dixie Chicks (who won the 2006 Song of the Year Grammy with Wilson's co-written "Not Ready to Make Nice"), Jason Mraz, and Mike Doughty, and who gets liner-note kudos from none other than authentic musical guru Rick Rubin. Yet Dan Wilson has definitely logged some miles that warrant respect, first laboring with Minneapolis's neo-psychedelic Trip Shakespeare, then leading rock trio Semisonic to a huge hit and Grammy nomination ("Closing Time"). Free Life marks his solo debut, and it's easy to see that despite admirable collaborations with other artists (guests like Sheryl Crow and the Jayhawks' Gary Louris pop up here and there on Free Life, further testament to Wilson's standing with peer rockers), he saved some of his best ideas for himself. In truth, there are nothing but love stories here, and Wilson's gift for rich and haunting melodies and open, direct lyrics make each song unique, each an intimate peek into the travails of modern infatuation and the occasional heartache. "Sugar," "All Kinds," and the exquisite "Honey Please" express an honest longing too often missing from post-millennium pop music, and the up-tempo title track is a beautiful construction, building from a quiet wisp of acoustic guitar to a lush conclusion. Dan Wilson's Free Life is a rocking and romantic set, and if you didn't know his name before, this record is a great way to get introduced. --Ben Heege
