Summary: New Sondre Lerche fan!
Comment: I enjoyed the music to this movie during the film, especially the song at the wedding. So, I bought the soundtrack. I had never heard of Sondre Lerche before and am now a huge fan. The songs are unique and fun. But, if you're not a Sondre Lerche fan you won't like this CD. If you are, you'll love it, and if you've never heard of him- give him try. Another thing I liked about this CD is that it had an additional song not listed on the CD cover- the "Ruthie Pig Face Draper" song that Dan's brothers sing before his blind date. Great CD!

Summary: Weak Effort
Comment: I enjoyed the movie, and have purchased the DVD, but I will not be buying this soundtrack. I always notice musical selections in movies, and frankly I thought this music was a poor choice. Music can go a long way toward making or breaking a movie, but in this case the movie manages to survive in spite of the music. The music was neither memorable nor well executed. The guitar work was adequate, but the melodies and singing did nothing to enhance the movie. If the producers intended to re-create the memorable folk influence Simon and Garfunkel had in the Graduate, they failed. If that was the goal, perhaps Simon and Garfunkel music could have been used or, in a more modern vein, Randy Newman compositions would have been a better choice.

Summary: Not the same as hearing the songs during the movie
Comment: I loved this movie and the score went well during the film. Unless you are a big Sondre Leche (or whatever his name is) fan, you're probably not going to care for the soundtrack much. When Steve Carrell sings the My Love Open the Door Song it is such a climatic point in the story, yep, not even on the soundtrack.

Summary: Family First
Comment: Dan is a great dad, he struggles with two teenage daughters, and a eight year old daughter. The family lost their mother to cancer three years prior. Dan has been raising his family as a single father. Some of the common themes were dating, blind dates, discovering love in three days, a day at the light house, a teenager crush, and large family get reunion.

Dan meets Marie at the book store by cirmstance. Marie presupposes Dan to be hired help and request a book on love. Marie having ended on long term relationship and entered another with a mystery man, Dan's brother Mitch. Dan wanders the Book and Bait store selecting books on poetry, humour, and romance for Marie. Dan embarassly admits he doesn't work at the store and wants to make up the misunderstanding. Dan spends the day talking about himself and his family. Marie leaves Dan but gives him her phone number. Dan and Marie are confronted with an ackward situation at the family cabin as Mitch introduces Marie as his girl friend. Marie can do anything: aerobics, running, travel, advice on education and love, and fits in jovially with the family.

Janes boyfriend takes a bus to see her. The two get caught kissing by Dan and Dan sends the boyfriend to stay with his relatives. Jane calls Dan a "murder of love" and a "bad parent".

Dan believes in being honest. Dan does not disclose that Marie was the woman he meet at the book store. Dan is strongly attracted to Marie. Dan and Marie continue play the game of being innocent, but they are deeply jealous for each others affection. Funny scenes include morning aerobics, falling out the shower room window, burnt pancakes, and the parent child talk.

Dan flirtatiously tackles Marie during a game of football. Cara sits next to Dan and tells him she covered for his flirting and says, "I can tell, I'm seventeen". An arranged date brings disaster for Dan and Mitch. Mitch falls for Dan's date and Dan falls deeper in love with Marie.

The family talent show becomes a turning point as Dan sings for Marie. Dan sings to Marie and she confesses love to Dan. Marie realizes that Mitches lines were taken from Dan's book: "an angel walked in" and "I'll forgive your past, if you forgive mine." Marie tells Mitch, he is a nice man with a nice family, but they need to find their true loves, good bye. Marie leaves Mitch and the family is in turmoil. Marie calls Dan and tells her to meet him at the bowling alley. The two enjoy bowling. The family surprises Dan and Marie and Mitch strikes Dan in the face knocking him down.

About this time Dan is being consider as an author for a syndicate. The owners visit Dan and tell him they like want he has been telling his readers: "family first" and "morality".

Lillie makes a story board of their mother from pictures taken on a day visiting the lighthouse. Dan tells his girls that he misses their mother every day and that he loves Marie.

Mitch start dating the plastic surgeon. Dan losses his drivers license and Cara gets to drive. Dan meets Marie again and they are happy. Dan marries Marie and "they live happily ever after".

This is a Cinderella story and a feel good story.

Editorial Reviews:

In the tradition of Simon & Garfunkel's The Graduate and Cat Stevens' music for Harold and Maude, Sondre Lerche's Dan in Real Life finds the Norwegian sensation lending his coy, almost precious, touch to this movie's soundtrack. Several tracks are plucked from Lerche's back catalogue, including "Modern Nature" (2002's Faces Down), the Elvis Costello-penned "Human Hands" (2006's Duper Sessions), and "Airport Taxi Reception" (2007's Phantom Punch). These and the seven instrumental cue tracks form the matrix surrounding the four originals, among them a smarmy, beautiful duet with Regina Spektor, whose dulcet voice plays ideal foil to Lerche's own. "I'll Be OK" mimics the aw-shucks charisma of every character lead actor Steve Carell plays, offering inspired proof of director Peter Hedges' wisdom in handing the project to Lerche. Elsewhere, a string-heavy cover of Pete Townshend's seminal "Let My Love Open the Door" provides a memorable highlight. Hedges postulates in the liner notes that perhaps the film was made "so more of the world can hear [Lerche's] music," and certainly, this album provides an enticing vehicle for newcomers to his wavering vibrato, saccharine falsetto, and all too genteel songwriting, though existing Lerche fans may lament the relative shortage of new material here. --Jason Kirk
