Customer Rating: Summary: A Most Enchanting Evening... Comment: I love her music and I've been a fan of L.M. for a long time, but seeing this performance on the DVD has given me a new perspective on her talents - she is just an amazing lady.
This most interesting and exotic collection of musicians and musical instruments set in one of the most beautiful architectural structures I've ever visited is an enchanting and perfect combination.
My only regret is that I was not at the Alhambra for that magical evening...but I was absolutely spellbound viewing the performance on the DVD while sitting on my sofa.
This is one of my best and favorite musical purchases.
Customer Rating: Summary: Loreena McKennit - Nights from the Alhambra Comment: I really enjoyed watching the DVD when I got this. The visuals include some almost 'arty' cut-aways from the stage set to show some of the surrounding architecture etc including some interesting outside day shots. Very well done and appropriately enhances the viewing experience. (All the songs are on the 2 CDs as well)
The music is easy to listen to, typically celtic of course - but mixed with it's own unique flavour. Lereena's singing is easy on the ears, although I did find after a while some songs seemed similar to others. Probably not the best idea to listen to the whole show in one sitting when it is late and you are already a bit tired :)
It is always a pleasure to watch extremely skilled musicians playing.
Overall impression: great songs, good singing and an incredible setting.
Customer Rating: Summary: Stuningly beautiful Comment: This is an incredible concert. The musicians were perfect! I thought the chello player was particularly gifted. It was a delight to hear so many different and unique instruments.
I highly recommend listening to this.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent Comment: Excellent. Amazing video and music in a marvellous ancient place. I love Lorenna McKennit music.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful Live Album Comment: This is a fantastic live album of Loreena McKennitt, as most of her live albums are. I must have listened to this CD for several weeks on my iPod. I had the pleasure of seeing Loreena at Barnes & Noble in Manhattan and then later at Radio City Music Hall. She and the musicians were magnificent. Especially the violinist - Hugh Marsh. He is phenomenal.
This CD really captures the live energy that was in the concert I went to in the US. The CD/DVD is a nice little package. On the DVD you get a glimpse of some historic architectures and monuments that Loreena visits and narrates about. She talks of the cultural influences and the meanings behind them. She gives a narration before each piece she sings; giving you a thorough understanding of how she builds her inspiration. I highly recommend this CD/DVD. You will not be disappointed.

After nearly a decade off the scene, Loreena McKennitt returned to the performance and recording stage in 2006 and 2007. The Canadian singer picked up exactly where she left off, traveling through the Celtic-Middle Eastern fusions she explored on The Book of Secrets with her latest studio album, An Ancient Muse. Now, with momentum behind her, she's released a DVD document of her performance at Alhambra palace in Granada, Spain. This is the same performance that has been running on PBS station pledge drives for the last year, but with a double CD included. McKennitt's renditions of songs from An Ancient Muse and her earlier albums are impeccable. As she is something of a perfectionist, there isn't much deviation from the original studio versions, but McKennitt is in fine voice and the band gets to rave it up a few times on tracks like "The Bonny Swans," where violinist Hugh Marsh and guitarist Brian Hughes trade increasingly frantic leads. This is an expanded group for McKennitt, with players from England, Greece, and the Middle East playing oud, dumbek, kanoun, hurdy-gurdy, duduk, and other ancient sounds from the British Isles to Turkey. The advantage of this edition of the Alhambra performance over that seen on PBS is that we're spared McKennitt's earnest and precious interstitials, talking about the location and her inspirations while slowly running her hands over Celtic carvings. But if you want it, that version of the performance is also on the DVD, as the commentary track. The CDs wisely drop even the between-song patter, which is fine, but not something to sit through on repeated listenings. Although the performance is beautifully, if conventionally filmed, and it's great to see this virtuoso band playing in communion, it's ultimately McKennitt's songs themselves that brim with visual imagery as she creates her ancient evocations as effectively on the concert stage as she does in the studio. --John Diliberto More from Loreena McKennitt An Ancient Muse | The Book of Secrets | The Visit | To Drive the Cold Winter Away | The Mask and Mirror | A Winter Garden: Five Songs for the Season | Parallel Dreams | Elemental | Live in Paris and Toronto |
