Customer Rating: Summary: Great Watrous Big Band Comment: Finally out with some of my favorites from this band: "Spain" with Ed Xiques great soprano solo. "Dichotomy": Danny Stiles 1st Class trumpet, Watrous, and climaxed with tenor solo from Frank Perowsky. "Ayo" with Danny Stiles again on trumpet, Dick Hyman on synthesizer and Ed Soph on drums. Cool "Fourth Floor Walkup" (saw Bill play this tune with our local junior college jazz band in 1976-have the full recording of entire concert). I rate this better than the second album "Tiger Of San Pedro."
Customer Rating: Summary: Bill Watrous is the man! Comment: I have this recording on vinyl. I haven't enjoyed it for years since it's scratched up bad. It was good to listen on cd. Bill Watrous is the best t-bone player, ever! Sorry JJ, Glen et al. I saw him in concert on around '77 or '78. His "Circular Breathing" technique is awesome. It's as if he never takes a breath! He really hits the stratosphere with his range in the upper register. His band was one of the best. To bad these guys aren't around anymore. Just like Maynard, (RIP), these greats have kind of fallen off the face of the earth.
Customer Rating: Summary: A jazz classic Comment: When I was a young trombone player in Junior High and High School and needed inspiration, I would borrow my brother's copy of this album. Now, 25 to 30 years later, it still inspires. Watrous' cadenza in "Fourth Floor Walk-Up" is as amazing as the first time I heard it. And what a band! They can really cook. Their cover of Chick Corea's "Spain" is fantastic and sets the perfect tone for the CD. From the first notes, you know you're in for a treat. If you're a fan of Jazz Orchestras (I don't use the Big Band label as it always makes me think of '40s dance music) or trombone jazz, you need to have this CD in your collection.
Customer Rating: Summary: Blast from the Past - Manhattan Wildlife Refuge Comment: I was fortunate to see this exact band perform live at NYU's student center in the early 1970s. This was a short-lived band of stellar musicians with only one recording under the MWR umbrella, and they were wonderful. Filled with good arrangements and tasteful solos, this recording will remain timeless to those who appreciate good writing/arranging and inspired performances by some of the best musicians in NYC at that time.
Customer Rating: Summary: At Last! Comment: I have been listening to this for 20 years from a tape I copied from a tape a friend had copied from the original vinyl. The band has explosive energy, and a ton of talent. The arrangements and songlist are perfect. I cannot imagine it having been executed better. Twenty years later I have not grown tired of it.
If you are looking for truly exciting modern big band, you cannot go wrong with this. This band's other recording, The Tiger of San Pedro, is also a must-have.
I am just thrilled that it's finally available on CD.

First time on CD for this 1974 album from the Jazz trombonist, one of only two Big Band albums he recorded in the '70s. Featuring musical assistance from Dick Hyman, Joe Beck and Danny Stiles. Also available: The Tiger Of San Pedro. The same fans that buy all our Maynard Ferguson reissues have been screamin' for these! Wounded Bird. 2007.
