Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: This Isn't Anything Like Drive-By Truckers Comment: I for one am glad Siren of the Ditch doesn't compare to DBT. Because frankly I'm not a fan of DBT at all. I think if I want to listen to country/rock or alt country, whatever the hell you want to call it, I will be listening to Lucero. As for Jason this is the first country album that I have ever purchased. Believe when I say this guy is going to be huge. Listen to In a Razor Town and Dress Blues and tell me this guy isn't one talented MF. I have listened to those two songs a couple of times everyday since I bought the album. But not every single song on the album is great. Down In a Hole kind of sucks and is the only song on the album that I skip. It's just boring to me. The rest are just really great music. Listen to the samples and if you like those you won't be disappointed. Customer Rating: Summary: Brilliant, but it's all over the place........ Comment: A great CD, of course with the DBT heritage, you knew it would be good....but it borders on brilliant. At first, it seems a bit all over the place, different type of music demonstrated throughout....even the singing approach seems varied from different tracks....but the end result as a whole is an incredible work that showcases even more talent than was already known. Highly Recomended for fans of musicianship and creativity bordering on art. I also recomend the new Poi Dog Pondering '7' CD as well for another interesting journey. Customer Rating: Summary: Jason is a god! Comment: Jason Isbell is a god. Sirens of the ditch is timeless and soulfull and in the pocket. The DBT 19 song release is noisy dirty and repetitive. God bless that mess. Jason is classic and pertinant. By the way, don't miss the special itunes cut: Whisper. I don't know why it ain't on the album. It is HOT. Jason demos his writing and musical talent all in one album. After 2 or 3 listens, you'll be playin' this over and over - it wears on you. Long live rock with a little 'ole southern hospitality! Customer Rating: Summary: Idenity Crisis? Comment: I'll start out saying i really was expecting alot more from this record. Being a Drive By Truckers fan i was thinking it would be a rocker, especially after hearing Jason sing and play guitar. I appreciate his country music heritage, i too grew up listening to my parents Country music, i mean Country with no Rock mix. I guess i have a biased opinion, i think Country/Rock is a false Genre. In my opinion you are either a Rocker or you are not. I put up with the Country songs by The Truckers because the Rock songs on their records simply blow me away but their is not one track on Jason's solo that has me playing air guitar or tapping my feet. Sirens Of The Ditch is a very weak effort by a extremely talented young man. I think it will serve him well when he fiqures out who he wants for a fan base. I recommend this record to anyone wanting something to relax with because it definately is a sleeper. More Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Accomplished guitarist and songwriter Jason Isbell, formerly of Drive By Truckers (DBT), releases his debut solo album Sirens Of The Ditch. The album rocks with 11 tracks all written by Isbell kicking off with "Brand New Kind Of Actress", followed by the rocker "Down In A Hole", a swampy number featuring Muscle Shoals natives Spooner Oldham and David Hood. Isbell s songwriting skills shine especially on "Dress Blues" a pensive ballad about a high-school classmate who lost his life fighting in Iraq and "Chicago Promenade" a tribute to his late Grandfather. Listeners caught glimpses of Isbell s skills on Drive-By Truckers records with tracks like "Danko/Manuel" and "Outfit". Sirens Of The Ditch's mystical quality can be partially attributed to the FAME recording studio (Aretha Franklin, Duane Allman, Otis Redding) in Isbell s hometown of Muscle Shoals, AL where the album was recorded. A lot of old soul musicians came through here in the late 60s and 70s and helped define the Muscle Shoals sound, the lifelong Alabamian explains, so that influence was always in my environment, but on this record I really tried to capture that. Co-produced by Isbell and Patterson Hood (DBT), Sirens Of The Ditch features Isbell singing lead vocals and playing guitar throughout, joined by Shonna Tucker (DBT) on Bass and Brad Morgan (DBT) on drums. Several musicians pop in for cameos including Spooner Oldham and David Hood (Patterson s father) on "Down In A Hole", John Neff (DBT) on "Dress Blues" and Patterson himself guests on "Shotgun Wedding".
