Summary: You ll love it if you love this sort of thing.
Comment: Musical taste is impossible to figure, so you might hate this album and still be a decent person. Maybe. But if you like FF, this is a high point you'd be wise to get. I say it's their best album alongside 'Echoes, Silence, Patience, Grace.' Since they worked with the same producer for both, they sound the most similar on those two albums. It's a good thing.
Honestly, I don't think there's anything truly wrong with this one. The music, the lyrics, the sound, it's all good. No, it isn't earth shattering, but it is really good, solid rock. And when they slow down, 'February Stars' is as good as slow ever gets.
The bonus tracks are a bonus, but nothing stellar. I already knew 'Down in the Park,' which I'd call the best of the lot. I might be biased toward it. They re all fun anyway, and 'The Colour and the Shape' (last track) is a blast, for those who think that Grohl screaming like a maniac is a blast.
I admit that FF is a bit formulaic, but it's a great formula, and this is the original. It's also a whole lot of fun... if you like the Foo Fighters. What's not to like anyway?

Summary: One of the Greats
Comment: The Foo Fighters' second album, The Colour & the Shape, brings to mind several immediate reactions. First and foremost, you realize you're listening to one of the best rock albums of the 90s. Few bands can move from the brain-melting overdrive of "Wind Up," to the happy-go-lucky frivolity of "See You," to the slow-burning build-up of "February Stars," and do it convincingly. There's something for everyone on this album, which would normally prove to be a handicap for a less capable group. Many look to this album as the last gasp of grunge, though this not a convincing argument upon listening. It lacks the self-loathing and screw-you song composition, and instead embraces a sound that's more ready for arenas. This isn't Motley Crue, though. With this album, Dave Grohl and his bandmates walk the extremely narrow line between easily approachable and musically dense. It might make you nostalgic for the days when the radio played material that was at once artistically relevant as well as immediately appreciable by casual listeners (or, you might just sit back and let the 16th notes that Grohl plays on his high-hat in "Everlong"-- while keeping the beat-- blow your mind).

Sadly, looking back a decade later, another reaction might be that this was the pinnacle of the band's achievement. With the singles that pretty much everyone knows by heart by now-- "Monkey Wrench," "My Hero," "Everlong"-- this album launched the Foo Fighters, and they haven't really revisited this disc's mixture of avant-cool and unpredictability since. Situated today as godfathers of modern rock, perhaps they feel they've already been here and they've already done this. It's a shame, because you'll be hard-pressed to find an album that is this catchy but still retains its soul.

If you haven't already heard The Colour & the Shape, do yourself a favor and pick it up. And try not to wear a hole in it.
