Summary: SALMON DANCE = SUPER CHILL
Comment: Everyone, even the amazon editorial busted on the salmon dance. Which is my favorite song on the track. I can listen to that one song over and over. Then again these people probably don't like weird music like clap your hands say yeah or architecture in helsinki.

Summary: Can the album save itself from "The Salmon Dance"?
Comment: Well after the single release of "Do It Again", We Are The Night made it's appearance in the U.S. The wait wasn't necessarily worth it.

While "Do It Again" did peak some interest as to what was in store for the LP, one listen to the LP made you wondering what happened. The album doesn't take the staple C.B. format - start strong and fade. I'm not even sure what the "strong" part of the album is.

"Saturate" turns out to be a real standout good song, and the LP version of "Do It Again" is well done. Other tracks that end up being worth repetitive listening are "Das Spiegel", "Burst Generator", and "Modern Midnight Conversation". Thank goodness for the skip function.

As others have mentioned, "The Salmon Dance" might well be the worst song ever released. Not just by the Chemical Brother, but ever! I have no idea what anyone was thinking putting that together. It's terrible and is the 'nail in the coffin' for an overall mediocre album.

Maybe things will improve next time around. An apology for "The Salmon Dance" is a good start.

Summary: sigh...
Comment: what happened? im just perplexed. i like different styles of music & i am all for supporting bands that i like to switch it up a bit & expand themselves. but i still expect the same passion & creativity to come through, even if they banged on some pots or played spoons.

i dont want to say anything bad about them, because all these years (its been over a decade) & as the dust brothers, they have continued to please me very very much. ive seen them live 4 times. im just hoping this was a once off & we can get passed it. i've heard rumours that sony kind of pushed them this way but who knows????

Comment: Up until now CB have been one of my top groups. They've got some great stuff out there. This album is worse than I can really verbalize, so I won't try so hard (just like they didn't try with it). Go to youtube and check out the salmon dance. If you can watch that and tell me it sounds good to you, by all means get this, but I haven't found the hamster dance funny since the 90's and it is about as good. I am 100% positive that much of the support of this is just because it's by CB. If it was their first album, they'd never have gained any traction at all with it and for no other reason than that it is horrendously unenjoyable and amateurish.

Summary: Fantastic but unexpected from the Bros.
Comment: I love this album. I didn't like it at first. I was a little leary. I at first. The sounds were unlike I have ever heard from the Brothers before. I loved a lot of the older albums and going from them to this...it was a little weird. I listened to it at work a lot and over time I really grew to love it. If you are a Chemical Brothers fan I think you will enjoy it at least to some level worth purchasing it. If you aren't a fan you might just listen to it somewhere before purchasing. I was happy purchasing it. If you are a Chemical Brothers fan, you well know that their work is a bit different from anything else in the same genre. You already know to expect the unexpected and accept it and love it.

Editorial Reviews:

One can never accuse the Chemical Brothers of consistency. We Are the Night continues their eclectic electronica approach even though the big-beat groove of the title track remains their digital calling card. Spotted with a minimalist keyboard pattern, vocal non sequiturs, and sampled sound effects, the infectious groove of "We Are the Night" eventually evolves into the monotone-chanted dance chorus of "We are the night skies/We are the bright lies," recalling Brian Eno circa Here Come the Warm Jets. However, for every catchy electro-dance, there's a tune that leaves you scratching your head. What to make of the novelty song "The Salmon Dance" is anybody's guess, though you might find some illumination in a salmon recipe on their Web site. With fractured nursery-rhyme lyrics that are sung like an off-color Sesame Street rap, it will drive you up the wall--or at least toward the skip button. Then there's Midlake singing the trancey ballad "The Pills Won't Help You Now," making the Chemical Brothers sound like a sci-fi version of Coldplay. Retro-analog synthesizers dominate, with the electro-grooves of "Das Spiegel," "Burst Generator," and "Saturate," which builds on a Kraftwerk-forged metal framework coupled with storming sampled drums. The circuits of '70s techno-pop artist the Normal are re-soldered on "Do It Again." With Ali Love singing the title-track chorus, it's built to be a summertime anthem akin to Tag Team's "Whoomp! (There It Is)," albeit robotically chilled. --John Diliberto
