Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: What did you EXPECT? It's a REMIXED cd people, not a REMAKE Comment: I loooooved the cd. It helps people my generation understand the beautiful and softness of Ms. Holiday's voice. I like that they put nice upbeat dance music and beats and joined them togther with her softness and charsmatic voice. Of course, i wish there was more, but then again, it wouldn't be a "remixed" cd now would it? Bravo! Customer Rating: Summary: AWESOME Comment: I can't stop listening to this CD. It is absolutely awesome!!! My favorite this week is track four. If you don't have it you gotta get it!!! The remixes are AWESOME!!!! Talk about innovative and change, these remixes are AWESOME. I can't say it enough!!!! Customer Rating: Summary: Highly Recommended Comment: This CD gets better and better upon repeated listenings. Its off the bloody hook really. Every track spot on. If you are a jazz purest, or struggle with other genres there is a 99% chance you will not like something like this. As you can see by other reviewers this one is not everyones bag of bananas. I'm really blown by it. I really am. I can't get over it. She would have loved this. Makes me love her even more. Well done. Customer Rating: Summary: Loathsome ghouls Comment: I heard this on the radio and just about lost my lunch. It was so horrible to discover that the loathsome ghouls who produced this had stolen Billie's beautiful, beautiful voice from its native setting and imprisoned it in their own soulless wasteland - - just to make a buck off her corpse. Heck, why not? She didn't get mistreated or ripped off enough while she was alive, right? Hey, guys, can I dig up your dead mamma? I want to paint her skull pink and put it on my lawn along with the gnomes. Oh. By the way. The backing band? They stink. But that's what you'd expect here. If they had any talent they'd make their own music. Instead all they can try to do is eat the bodies of real humans. Customer Rating: Summary: Adds nothing, detracts mostly Comment: This album is just a cut and paste job. There is a lot of extra production which adds nothing to the original recording and obscures the talent of Ms Holiday. A couple of tracks work because they enhance the mood of the original without totally deconstructing it, but mostly this is a travesty best forgotten. More Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Hot on the heels of Nina Simone's like-minded project, this 14-track disk takes Billie Holiday's masterful and mourning vocals of 1935 to 1958 to the 21st-century digital dance floor, courtesy of some resourceful remixers and DJs from Swingsett & Takuya and Nickodemus & Zeb to Organica and Poppyseed. You have to give these aural alchemists credit for their daring, but some tracks work better than others. The best include "Spreadin' Rhythm Around," featuring Digable Planet's Ladybug Mecca, the echoplexed embers of GXR's "Long Gone Blues," DJ Logic's string-centric "Glad to be Unhappy," and Daniel Y's infectious, Soul to Soul/Loose Ends grooved "Billie's Blues." With augmentation provided by live guitarists, keyboardists, and percussionists, these scientists of sound don't desecrate the gardenia-wearing goddess's eternal artistry; rather, they globally reposition it for this era's electronica-fueled iPod generation, from the downbeat to the download. --Eugene Holley, Jr.
