Comment: This is a great cd. Every track is excellent and hearing Neal Young as a young man brought back many good memories from when these were all new songs. I highly recommend.

Summary: Totally Awesome, but......
Comment: I've been a major Neil Young fan since the first Buffalo Springfield album, & I must say that upon viewing this concert dvd, I have just a few comments-if you've been a Neil fan for a long time, you will absoulutely love this-it is precious. It's so good hearing him hitting the high notes as clear as he did on the original albums. Not only the live performance, but the 'home-movie' extras, which give us a bit of an idea of what Neil is/was really like offstage. But...what in the world is the deal with the showing of a reel-to-reel tape recorder for several minutes of some songs, & in a few cases, the entire song instead of Neil himself performing?? Did whoever put this out think that anyone on earth would rather watch a recorder on Neil's chair instead of him?? Thus the 4 instead of 5 stars. Otherwise, this is a true Neil Young fan's dream dvd-I hope they release more live shows from this period, & especially earlier..maybe some Buffalo Springfield, or even an early concert during his 1st two solo album tours, hopefully with this same quality, which is perfect.

Summary: AWESOME!! - Just get it.
Comment: No mind bending long winded review here just the facts. Classic solo NY that all NY fans and most folk/country rock fans can't do without. If you get this then spend the extra 5-6 bucks for the DVD/CD version, it is pretty cool and the sound is great. I hope Neil puts out that long long over due box set soon, none of us are getting any younger including Neil. Either way this is great stuff and please put out more of it Neil. With all the garbage in music today many of us long for classic unreleased stuff from the classic rock era (mid to late 60s - early to mid 70s). Also don't forget the Live at the Fillmore with Crazy Horse DVD/CD version is also very nice. Rock on Neil.

Summary: Quite Simply, This is a Truly Remarkable and Dazzling Achievement
Comment: If one were to look at Neil Young and what he accomplished during the years that Dylan retreated into obscurity, the result would be a peek at what may arguably be the most prolific singer-songwriter in history. While the sixties saw Dylan produce a remarkable string of landmark albums starting with "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" all the way up to "Blonde on Blonde," the late sixties to early seventies saw Neil Young take Dylan's place, opening with a remarkable self-titled solo debut album, and following it up with the stunning "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere", "After the Gold Rush," "Harvest" and "On The Beach", the latter being arguably his greatest, and perhaps one of music's most personal and remarkable achievements. As well, there were probably a host of songs made during that period that to this day he has not released. The speed at which Neil Young's creative fury was moving is purely witnessed on this live cd. As he announces that he "will be singing mostly new songs tonight,' Neil ventures into many raw cuts of the tracks that would come to comprise these subsequent albums. However, the main, and probably the most pivotal difference between Dylan and Young is in the ability of the listener to enter the song. Where Dylan is without a doubt the songwriting genius of our time, and simply one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century in any form, his songs are art, to be placed on a wall and admired, pondered and looked upon from afar. Neil, on the other hand, allows the fan to enter into every song, almost allowing the fan to swear that the song was written about them. Neil Young has been quoted as saying something of this sort: "Of course, the songs are about me, but why should I exclude everyone else from them?" Indeed, when Neil shares his music, he is true to his word. In this intimate concert with Neil Young, one feels as if they are sitting right there on the stage with him; while listening to the experiences of his journey, he always allows the possibility that you have experienced them with him.

Comment: As someone with a back rod, other health issues that require me to rest lots, I am very pleased with this dvd and the others I have purchased. In a strange way the music and getting lost in it helps with the pain, On this dvd I liked the scenes, but wish there had been more of him personally singing.

"I'm gonna sing mostly new songs tonight," Neil Young tells the rapt Massey Hall audience, "...I've written so many new ones that I can't think of anything else to do with them other than sing 'em." He steps to the mic unadorned, distant from CSNY's rippled harmonies or Crazy Horse's yowl, hypnotically nailing 17 tracks on this unreleased 1971 solo set. You hear him tower at vocal heights on the chorus for "Old Man" (then a debuted, brand-new song) and name-check Canada on "Journey to the Past" and North Ontario on "Helpless," much to the Toronto crowd's delight. The sound is impeccable, and the closeness to Young in this spare setting exhilarates--especially his vocal quavering in the high registers, his intricate guitar work, and an overall vibe that exceeds description. And the DVD: Here you catch Young in tightly framed, starkly-lit shots, flourishing in the early years of an unparalleled rock career. Not only that, you get commentary from 1997, a rare window on how Young thinks, how he speaks, his humor. --Andrew Bartlett
