Customer Rating: Summary: Dense, Erratic, Awesome Comment: I am a relative newcomer to the Modest Mouse universe - the first album of their I owned was 'Good News for People Who Love Bad News' - but I don't think that disqualifies me from giving an opinion on this record.
Overall, it's very good. Not quite as good as previous ones, of course, but it's perhaps a darker step away from 'Good News' to let people know that pop is not what's to be expected from Modest Mouse.
Outright anger and cynicism, rather than just ethereal philosophizing, takes up much more space, sonically and lyrically, than on previous outings. The idea of sinking and drowning, especially, pops up in several songs. The guitars can be loud, to symbolize a sinking ship, or they can buzz, like a fly with only one wing. It's amazing, really.
There are extremely great songs - 'March Into the Sea' and 'Florida' - and there are songs that are less so. Some of the tracks - namely 'Parting of the Sensory' - could have bee broken up into two songs and been more successful. The last two minutes (!) of 'Parting' is great.
Of all the tracks, 'Spitting Venom' is perhaps the most impressive and confusing. It's the longest song on the album and just feels like it should close the record, and yet for some reason it doesn't, which I think was a mistake. But that doesn't take away from the quality of the song, which is astounding.
If you thought that 'Good News' is a much-hyped, 'over-produced' album, then 'We Were Dead' may hit the mark with you.
Customer Rating: Summary: Two words: Spitting Venom Comment: Is 'Spitting Venom' the greatest song ever recorded? Quite possibly. But it's hard to say, as 'Parting of the Sensory' and 'Little Motel' are pretty good too. As is 'Dashboard.'
I fall in love with this album more every day. It's more than an album- the humor and irony keep me laughing and smiling. When Modest Mouse sing 'we laid all our chips in the right spots but still lost' it makes me giggle. Life is hard. Modest Mouse make it easier.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Album Comment: Keep in mind I'm a bitter 30 year old who thinks that the best music ever came out when I went to high school (91-95....bands like Alice in Chains and Soundgarden). I have no dog in the emo or whatever fight. Hell, I barely know what all the stuff means.
That being said I borrowed this album from my little sister and loved most of it. The songs are very catchy, even if I can barely understand the lyrics. My personal favorites are Education (the beat that goes thru the song is very infectious), Spitting Venom (the horn part at the end of the song is absolutely brilliant, and an amazing transtion from what starts off as a folky sort of song), Fire It Up (antoher very catchy song), Little Motel (a very pretty song), and Dashboard (yeah, I know it's poppy sounding but it's also catchy as well).
The other songs are ok, although I don't listen to them too much, but I have to give an album released this decade 5 stars since I'm becoming a bitter old man who hasn't been impressed with anything that's come out in this decade.
Customer Rating: Summary: Worst Modest Mouse CD yet. Comment: I am a Modest Mouse fan. I love every single song off of every single album EXCEPT this one. This album moves away from what makes Modest Mouse so great. It was a disappointment. I hope they can redeem themselves. I know they have it in them.
Customer Rating: Summary: Come A Long Way, Baby Comment: This band has come a long way. They went from making 25 second screw-around tracks a decade ago to this. Now, they are recruiting some of their own idols into their fanhood and even into their band. And with great songs like "Florida", "We've Got Everything", "Dashboard", "Fire It Up", and the 8-minute monster "Spitting Venom" here, they rule! There's no telling what nonsense this band'll do next.

Editorial Reviews:

Their last album may have given them a certifiable radio hit, airtime on VH1, and a Kidz Bop tribute, but listening to the follow-up to 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News, you might get the sense that the members of Modest Mouse are flinching at the spotlight. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, the group's fifth full-length release, is denser than its predecessor with tunes that seem willfully harder to penetrate. Even the addition of former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr to the line-up seems incidental, as Modest Mouse's off-kilter sound stays largely intact. But keep listening and it becomes obvious that the band hasn't lost any of his pop bite, especially midway through with a sweep of terrific songs like "Missed the Boat," "Education" and "Little Motel." It's hard to tell if there's another "Float On" in the bunch. In fact, the first single, "Dashboard," is one of the weakest Isaac Brock has ever penned. With Shins James Mercer adding lovely vocals to "Florida," however, it hardly matters. --Aidin Vaziri
