Summary: updated classic sound
Comment: The remixed Nina Simone has brought me hours of hip-shaking joy both in the kitchen and out. This is an excellent update on an unshakeable classic collection.

Summary: Incompetent insulting remixes of one of music's greatest talents
Comment: A few years back I purchashed an amazing CD of Shirley Bassey remixes and, for who knows what reason, I was under the impression that it was from this "Remixed and Reimagined" series so I purchased Nina's CD without hesitation.

I am a HUGE Nina Sinone fan and thought that there was much potential for "reimagining" some of her songs, but you will never find out from this mess. Rarely have I encountered such an unlistenable product that I wanted to stompt it to pretend that it enver existed. If you like Nina, stay away no matter how hip the marketing concept may sound.

Summary: For open-minded people...
Comment: I wish the purists would just stay away from these remix projects! They complain that this isn't the Nina Simone (or whoever) they're familiar with and trash the release because of their own hidebound attitudes. The fact is, this a well assembled remix project that should please fans of the jazz-electronica genre (Verve Remixed, etc.), and more open-minded Nina fans as well. Calling this house music is simple-minded. There are beats here to be sure, but the producers take a variety of approaches that honor the original music without trampling it too much. Of course, like most of these remix projects, some efforts are more successful than others, but overall, very solid. I hope there are more in the Remixed & Reimagined series in the pipeline. Meanwhile, the stubbornly literal-minded types should stop buying (and reviewing) these!

Summary: Nina would be disappointed
Comment: Nina Simone would be so disappointed with this. It just sounds like someone superimposed lyrics and new age groove music. It sounds like two different pieces of music playing at the same time. What a shame.

Summary: Good Just the Way She Is: Better Revisited than Remixed
Comment: I received an advance copy of the recording and put off listening to it for a year. Now I understand why. I'll admit I'm not an "avid" Nina Simone fan, but ever since her recording of "I Loves You Porgy" I've followed her career and enjoyed much of her work. Her strongest albums are the ones on which she's recorded live, in concert, preferably a club date with no more than bass and drums supporting her piano and vocal work. On the other hand, the albums on which she's a "stand-up singer" frequently smother her voice in overly orchestrated or boosted backgrounds.

On albums like "A Single Woman" and even "I Put a Spell on You," she often sounds like she's competing with the accompaniment rather than tailoring it to her own stylings and dramatic interpretations. But if sessions like the aforementioned strike the listener as a mismatch, they sound positively subtle and nuanced compared to "N.S. Remixed." If you're a Nina Simone completist, by all means give it a chance; if you're new to this admittedly "acquired taste," start with a solid, representative collection such as "Anthology" (2 discs, 31 tracks, the most complete and the best value), "Feeling Good," or "The Essential Nina Simone."

Editorial Reviews:

2007 collection of new remixes and reworkings of classic tracks from the often-sampled Jazz vocalist. 13 tracks including 'I Can't See Nobody' (Daniel Y. Remix), 'Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter' (Jazzeem's All Styles Remix), 'Westwind' (Organica Remix) and more. Sony/BMG.
