Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: Disappointing again Comment: Keep in mind I think Olga Tanon is close to being the finest Latina singer out there, exceeded only perhaps by Milly Quezada. But since the turn of the century her albums have become duller and duller. In the 90s we had superb, timeless albums like Mujer de Fuego, Siente El Amor, and Llevame Contigo. Even weaker ones like Nuevos Siendros and Te Acordoras de Mi managed to project a distinctive personality, and had some really fine songs. Yo Por Ti was a bit of a shock, and is uneven, but it is still an album I go back to and listen to with enjoyment. But since then it has not been good. Her material has become more conventional, with an emphasis on colorless ballads and pop merengue. I initally liked Una Nueva Mujer, but after the initial splash it makes, it tends to not wear well. I don't know what to really say about Soy Como Tu. It just has no real personality for me at all. The songs are just average, and when the material is average you usually don't get very interesting singing. Olga sounds as bored and uncomfortable singing these songs as I am listening to them. It's not bad music, it's just nothing special. Times change, musical styles change. I don't expect Olga to be singing the same kind of music she did in the 90s. But recent albums by Milly Quezada, Gilberto Santa Rosa and Juan Luis Guerra show that you can change with the times and still present an exciting sound that is fresh, but true to your past. Olga Tanon, who is as good as these singers, ought to be able to do the same. I never understand why people always think she is just "merengue". Anyhoo, this album is a collection of pop, tropical, ballads, dance, salsa, etc. Despite the wide variety Olga makes this a very cohesive effort. Customer Rating: Summary: Olga Tanon--Pero Que Linda! Comment: Soy Como Tu is yet another successful album by the gorgeous Olga Tanon. Although she has yet to fully return to her merengue roots, this CD is full of songs worth hearing. Many of the tunes are upbeat and easy to listen to, others are soft, sweet ballads that show off the range of Olga's voice. Even so, Soy Como Tu is certainly a new take on Olga's wide range of talents. I highly recommend this album to any of her fans, although some may still be disappointed in the divergence from her previous style.
