Customer Rating: Summary: Metheny's Musical Magic! Comment: Once again, Pat Metheny and his amazing bandmates prove that they are the greatest group of today and possibly, ever. If performances like this one are put in a time capsule or launched on the Voyager, future generations or other life-forms may think we had SOME good things about us. Buy this.
Customer Rating: Summary: A great performance Comment: If your looking a visual experience than unless your a musician your probably going to be disappointed. This is an audio experience. These guys play and that's all they do. But the playing is an experience. The This Way Up CD is a masterpiece and to see that it can be played live is a real treat. Sound wise I have to use Dolby Digtal 5.1 II since I have an older receiver (No HDMI) so I using the optical output from a PS3 and it sounds great. The 5.1 mix is also very good. Honestly I bought the DVD so I could get a 5.1 mix of This Way Up. But the live performance is an improvement over the CD.
Customer Rating: Summary: THE WAY UP - THE ONLY WAY Comment: A great DVD, from a great album, from a great musician, that I had the chance to see live, in Portugal. It's not easy to put in words what you feel when have the chance to see and ear the sounds that come out from Pat's guitars and imagination...those who like him like I do know what I'm talking about.
Customer Rating: Summary: A TRUE MASTER!!! Comment: WHAT CAN YOU SAY THE PAT METHENY GROUP IS MAGIC. THIS LIKE ALL THE OTHER PMG CONCERTS ARE A MUST OWN FOR ANY TRUE MUSIC LOVER. WHAT A MASTER THIS DVD HAS NO OTHER MUSIC BUT THE NEWEST GROUP 3 PART ALBUM, AT FIRST I THOUGHT IT MIGHT BE A PROBLEM BUT TO MY SUPRISE IT IS A MUSICAL MOVMENT ON A GRAND SCALE. THIS DVD RULES!!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: On the Way Down? Comment: This is the first and only Blu-Ray disc I have bought so far.
Picture quality: 5/5. Very good. It's almost like having the musicians in the room with you.
Sound quality: I can't comment on this, as I haven't connected it to my 5.1 system yet. Played through my Sony TV, the sound is at least OK!
Content: 3/5. This is where this disc disappoints. It's great to see Metheny on Blu-Ray, but such a shame that the recording should be of one of his worst-ever compositions. Metheny will be remembered as one of the greatest composers of the last quarter of the 20th century, so posterity deserves a good record of concert performances of his greatest pieces.
Those of us who saw the PMG perform 'The Way Up' will recall that after completing the marathon piece, the band then played many of their greatest hits -- almost as if it were a farewell tour. It is a great pity that this disc does not record a complete gig -- just the first half.
Most of the close-up shots are well chosen. I just didn't need to see the podgy, half-committed Steve Rodby reading the music that the rest of the band had bothered to memorise. Bring back Richard Bona, a far better bassist!
If ever the PMG go on tour again, you can bet that 'The Way Up' will be reduced to a 10-minute summary (if that). It is a terrible epitaph for a fantastic group.
