Customer Rating: Summary: Very Enjoyable Comment: Easy going, simple, laid back, and wonderful lyrics. I can listen to this music while my kids are around. That is important to me. I have to say I like his second album better than the first. It seems to me to be alittle more stripped down. I love it!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: The voice of this generation Comment: PLEASE listen to this kid!
I'm an old guy. I grew up in the Viet Nam era listening to Bob Dylan singing "The Times They Are A Changin'", to Phil Ochs, Simon & Garfunkel, and the revolutionaries Country Joe and the Fish and the Jefferson Airplane. The only thing WE did wrong then was we didn't overthrow the government, we became it, and we made it worse.
Enter Brett Dennen singing "I saw people's histories tatooed on their skins". I thought of the holocaust survivors whose story is dying as a new generation gives credibility to those who say it all never happened. Then he sings "I asked when is the revolution". Now? Please?
Our wonderful country is in some dark times. The top tenth of one percent of Americans now earn more than the bottom 50% combined. We have 40 million with no healthcare, and mindless war, and a sophomoric, pugnacious president. It's time for the revolution.
This kid is a lyrical giant at his ripe young late 20s age. His music has the same good but a little raw feel of the great poets of our prior generation. And his lyrics are so dead on, I still have a tear in my eye when I think of them.
Listen, listen to what he's saying. Maybe your heart can be thawed a little more like mine was. Thanks, Brett.
Customer Rating: Summary: There is Hope for Popular Music Comment: As a retired baby boomer, I'm sure I'm older than the average person who partakes of pop culture. Many of us have been out of the loop for years, and especially fed up with the entire music "industry".
Enter Brett Dennen. Holy Cow - a fresh sound, fully original and inspired, and completely devoid of artifice. In today's phony baloney world, how is this even possible? I guess I'd best not ask too many questions, and just appreciate these unexpected blessings when they appear.
In this case, I happened to tune into an online jukebox while playing a game when "Darlin' Do Not Fear" aired and gradually crept into my consciousness. "Who on Earth is that?" I asked myself, which led me to research that immortal question. I dumped the game and followed the trail which let me to a greater sampling of the music of Brett Dennen, finding all of it refreshing and delightful. The melodies are fun, while the lyrics confront reality and yet are uplifting. It's apparent that Dennen is a singer/songwriter because he loves it and happens to be great at it, and would do it whether it's lucrative or not. As he says, "When You Feel It, You Know".
Customer Rating: Summary: A black soul in a Irish boy's skin Comment: As an audiophile, I do my best to go outside the box and discover all those sounds between the black and the white, however Brett Dennen does the black and white quite well, pulling from his life experiences as well as the typical perception of the observer in the US.
He says what so many already think and puts this to music in a masterfully simple way. The music so much begs the listener to close their eyes and just be still for a minute to listen.(Not recommended for those driving). A very "from the heart" style, mostly using only his voice and a guitar.
I came by this musician from only a couple lines caught from a "Scrubs" episode:
"There ain't no reason (that)things are this way, that's how they've always been and intend to stay, I can't explain why we live this way, we do it everyday" .. with the help of a quick Google search -voila!
While not a completely stellar album (my opinion) it still has many strong tracks on it, and if you are the type that love to discover other people through the music they make, I recommend Mr. Dennen highly... I just felt like some of the tracks in the middle of album played off the same sound he generated for other tracks but with less diversity and musical uniqueness leaving all his words the burden to keep the songs interesting- in all I think only 4 tracks made it to my "burn-a-hole-in-it" standards, but it's definitely not a disc I regret buying, I wish this man a long successful career in being the simple, honest, real-life type of guy he is. He is a very welcome addition to my music collection. Thumbs up Mr. Dennen.
Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderfully Surprised Comment: One of the best folk/social commentary albums I've ran across in years. Thouroughly impressed.
