Customer Rating: Summary: A great introduction with modern interpretations Comment: To the Devil with the traditionalists!
"Rogue's Gallery" is a very well produced, distinctly modern interpretation of sea chanteys with some very traditional songs mixed in. I don't take issue with the approach and congratulate the producers for being open-minded about it, since many people who have come to chanteys are fans of the "pirate genre" and this CD evolved from Gore Verbinski's Disney movies, and may not appreciate a straight up traditional approach, which--face it folks--wasn't exactly a topic lighting up the world in 2006!
As a double CD, you will find some songs you will adore and others you can skip over. Overall, it's a wonderful introduction to a genre that deserves a fresh look.
Customer Rating: Summary: A Pirate's Treasure Comment: An extremely entertaining and somewhat inappropriate Pirate Masterpiece. (That is what we like about pirates. It is politically correct for pirates to be inappropriate!) The musicians paint vivid pictures with their lyrics. It was also fascinating to read how this album was pulled together. Not only will the pirate in your life enjoy this collection, the mermaid will too!
Customer Rating: Summary: Mostly brilliant Comment: I was just transferring this album to my MP3 player which has very limited storage. So limited in fact that I had to go through the tracks and drop the duds. After listening to every single one, I could only drop about 1/4 of the tracks and some of those reluctantly. The rest are simply great - sing along at the top of your lungs great.
I appreciate that this particular release might rankle fans of the genre but as a sea shanty newbie, I'm not expecting or even wanting authenticity. Love this album.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great compilation Comment: I have heard several CD's with pirate and sea shanties, this album has a good compilation and use a lot of music, others are just the voice shanties (maybe as they use to be)but with music it makes them more friendly for general public. It is a great offer but it could be great if the lyrics were somewhere in the booklet.
Customer Rating: Summary: Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys Comment: This is a "Rouge's Gallery" indeed! While I enjoyed the bawdy lyrics of some of the songs others may find them offensive. This must be listened to, keeping in mind, that these are the songs of sailors and pirates. Some of the vocals sound like the singer gargles with razor blades, but this too is somewhat expected due to the content of the material. Over all I found it to be (at least to me) a genuine representation of the title. Not for children!

Editorial Reviews:

Johnny Depp and director Gore Verbinski hatched the idea for Rogue's Gallery while filming "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest"--that idea being to cast genteel rock superstars like Bono, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Andre Corr, and Sting to reinterpret gritty seafaring standards for an exhaustive 43-track double-disc set produced by Hal Wilner. Throw in a bunch of credible folk stars (Loudon Wainwright III, Richard Thompson), their offspring (Rufus, Teddy) and a string of other curious characters (Jarvis Cocker, Antony) and what results is one of the strangest compilations in recent memory, if not exactly the most historically authentic or, well, digestible. Nick Cave embraces the role just a little too hard on "Fire Down Below," while Ferry can't help but sound like he's singing for the cast of "The Love Boat," but cut through the chaff and there is some real bootie here: Bono's "Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Jolie Holland's "The Grey Funnel Line" and "Boney" by a mysterious tramp called Jack Sh**, which must be some kind of anagram for Johnny Depp. --Aidin Vaziri
