Summary: AGAIN, ANOTHER COMPILATION!!! (Still a good selection of songs compiled by the original Fania owners of the time (Released 1971)
Comment: This time, we cannot blame Emusica (the new Fania owners), Sonído (the old Fania owners from the mid-80's-90's) or ANYONE else for having released ANOTHER COMPILATION CD as this "release" has originally been produced in 1971 by Jerry Masucci (President and co-founder with Johnny Pacheco of Fania Records in 1964).

Another blame I have, is ONCE AGAIN, for the people of V2 MUSIC (a division of Virgin Records, I believe) for having remade this compilation album for the UK/Europe.
How dare they remake a compilation album instead of remaking SO MANY of the GREAT FULL ORIGINAL FANIA ALBUMS that came out in THE REAL golden era of Salsa!!! It KILLS me! I HATE compilations, and instead of remaking MASSIVE albums for the UK/Europe like WILLIE COLON EL JUICIO (1972; now available remastered) and WILLIE COLON LO MATO (1973; now available remastered too) which were some of THE BEST EVER ORIGINAL Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe albums, they go and do MORE 'Various Artists' compilations, some outfashioned 1960's albums which in big part consist of Anglo-American Boogaloo, Shing-A-Ling and Soul Music, and a Rubén Blades compilation called BOHEMIO Y POETA (again, made by the original Fania owners in 1979)! TERRIBLE!...

Anyway... Lets get into the songs here. 4.Jazzy and 2.El Malo come from his FIRST EVER Fania release from 1967 titled: WILLIE COLON EL MALO. (Remastered version now available). Those, were 2 VERY GOOD songs out of the 5 VERY FINE Latin songs that the original album contained. MY favourite from EL MALO is: Quimbómbo ('tiene Guarará!') [The other 4 songs were Boogaloos & Shing-A-Lings!...]

Songs 8.Que Lío, 6.Guajirón (from the late Afro-American Pianist Mark 'Markolino' Dimond) and 9.Eso Se baila Así were the THREE songs that got selected from his 2nd Fania album from 1968: WILLIE COLON THE HUSTLER (now available remastered).
I can dare to say that Dimond's Guajirón is MY favorite tune from THE HUSTLER and Que Lío (at least for me) is a replacable song.
In my opinion, Masucci should just have put the title track The Husler instead, it's a NICE instrumental piece as well, (which includes a long Piano solo by M.Dimond at the beginning...)
For what concerns Eso Se Baila Así, the song contains what is (FOR ME) a positive protest message BY WILLIE COLÓN, HIMSELF, AGAINST BOOGALOO! Saying: 'Boogaloo doesn't go with me'! You go and enjoy it, but not me'!...
Otherwise, the song has a slight notable Boogaloo rhythm, but it's not too Americanised, it's DEFINITELY more than listenable...

Songs 3.Guisando and 7.El Titán come from his 3rd 1969 release GUISANDO (now available remastered.) I have to admit that, I remember that album not being quite of my taste, although I remember having enjoyed SOME songs.
Check that one out for yourselves...

Songs 1.Che Che Colé and 5.Juana Peña come from another of his big popular albums COSA NUESTRA (recorded 1969, I think. [Remastered version now available.]
Those 2 songs were 2 MASSIVE HITS of which I prefer Juana Peña by a BIG margin! Other Massive hits from that album were Te Conózco (bacalao) and Sonero Mayór, although No Me Llores Más was quite a popular tune too.
(Maybe this one should also have been remade by V2 Music for the UK/Europe!...)

Anyway... For what concerns the sound quality, I haven't bothered to hear this remastered edition's sound (I do not know yet who has remastered this Cd either...)

To finish off, I'd say that you first get started off with El Juicio and Lo Mato (both remastered in 2006, although Lo Mato didn't get remastered with its songs in their original order; BUT TOO BAD, GET IT ANYWAY!!!)

Summary: Willie's fist compilation on Fania! (Remastered)
Comment: These tracks are compiled from Willie Colon's first four albums on Fania records. It's a good place to start if you are looking to familiarize yourself with Colon's early work.
Lead vocals are by Hector Lavoe.
I must say, however, that the new digital transfer and remastering is a bit dissapointing. It seems that too much sound limiter was used thereby drowning out the treble. Otherwise, the sound is fuller. If tape hiss really bothers you then this is for you. Although, I think I like the old Fania reissue better. It has a better high end sound. -that's if you don't mind some hiss.
This edition has original album art and an informative essay by John Child.

You must buy it!!!
