Customer Rating: Summary: Never a dull moment Comment: Somewhere between Aphex Twin and Sesame Street, between bubbly and unnerving, resides this extremely off-kilter, inventive marriage of sound that's part jazz, part lounge, part hip-hop. For a quartet of French DJs who readily admit they haven't yet learned how to play instruments or read music, this turntablism experiment comes across as brilliantly polished (no instruments were used while making the album, just other records). Even when confronted with tracks like "L'interlude de qualite," in which a contemplative flute accompanies what sounds like amplified field recordings of arachnids molting -- and "Rainstorming," which pairs a slacker groove with scary bipolar whispers -- the album never seems deliberately quirky. This is Bjork's turf; J Dilla's "Donuts" with broader horizons, Avalanches with a thicker resume. The glue that holds Nam Nam all together are the infectious, fluid beats underlying all the cut-and-paste layers, particularly strong on the polyrhythmic skin-burrowing ambi-prog morsel, "Migration." Look for Nam Nam to get even more inventive on future releases when the DJs teach themselves how to play instruments and begin sampling themselves.
Customer Rating: Summary: Turntablism at it's finest Comment: When it comes to sheer skill using a mixer and turntable, these guys are the greatest I've ever seen. Their signature tonal scratching technique, fast crossfader flanger, and choice rhythms make them some of the most creative and awesome artists in the genre. On a personal note, the DVD that comes with this album is the real prize-winner, offering up a glimpse into their techniques and one of their best tracks (one they only play live), "Violins".
You won't be disappointed with this album.
Customer Rating: Summary: Birdy Nam Nam Comment: Amazing. A revolution in turntabalism. I have never heard such creativity. If your into this kind of music, I suggest buying this, I was very pleased.
Customer Rating: Summary: Preview First Comment: I was introduced to DJ Pone's work when he and DJ Drixxxe worked on The Transporter soundtrack. Transporter 2's soundtrack also featured DJ Pone as a member of Birdy Nam Nam, and since the group has done rather well in DJ competitions, I decided to buy this album to find out more.
I bought this album expecting the solid beats found in "Fighting Man" and "Rockin & Scratchin". Instead what I heard was a bunch of noise put together into a song with a beat, at least to my ears. There are a few solid tracks, but most are just random ambient noises put together on the fly (again, this was how I heard it). I wanted to give this a "1", but decided to give it another star for the following reasons. I am not a DJ and therefore can't appreciate this work like another DJ can. I say this because of the fact that these guys won prizes in the World TEAM championships, so they're definitely good at what they do, just not what I expected. So if you're not a DJ like myself, I suggest you to look into their music a bit more before you purchase this.

Editorial Reviews:

Alternately gloomy or funky, shot through with electronic acids and methodical cuts, the Birdy Nam Nam sound dispenses with plucking a guitar or crafting a chord on a Rhodes. Pushing back the limits of that raw material, these merciless crate-diggers deliver considered music, a jewel of vinyl composition that owes as much to DJ Shadow as to Sun Ra, as much to the electronic experts of the 1990s as to the 1980s rap producers. Birdy Nam Nam no longer play records, they play music. You can get off on Birdy Nam Nam without knowing that all the music you hear was assembled by DJs from mountains of vinyl - but the additional DVD enlightens us about Birdy Nam Nam's working methods - filmed in situ, in the studio and on the stage and includes live versions of the album tracks and recent unreleased pieces.
