Summary: Were you scared that I might get hurt?
Comment: The only reason I bought The Veronicas' The Secret Life of... CD is simply because I kept hearing comparisons between them and Meg & Dia (a band I enjoy a lot). I figured anyone being compared to Meg & Dia deserved at least a listen so I got this. Word of advice:

THIS IS NOTHING LIKE MEG & DIA.

It's not particularly bad. From track 6 on I quite enjoy listening to it. But, those first five songs are so disgustingly pre-teen that I can't even listen to them. Okay, I should probably elaborate on that a bit.

The music in those first few songs is pretty decent and the vocal delivery--as with the rest of the CD--is great. The lyrics are what destroy what really has the potential to be a good song. Don't believe me? Listen to them. They're so horrid that, and I kid you not, that only 12 year olds will think they're clever. And I know that pop music doesn't necessarily have to be deep but come on, devoting an entire song to saying how you thought a guy was gay is idiotic.

Never fear for those who see potential in these girls. From Mouth Shut on we're greeted with potential being realized.

By the time you get to Mouth Shut you basically know The Veronicas' routine...soft verses with rock choruses. This doesn't change on the latter half of the CD but gone are all the "I know I'm hot and you don't have a chance with me" vibes given out early in the CD, lyrics are better too. Plus, a couple ballads thrown in for good measure never hurt anyone, especially when you've got a good singing voice. Leave Me Alone shows a lot of depth with one of the best choruses of the entire disc. Nobody Wins explores further The Veronicas melodic side and we have another winner. Lyrics are at their best on this song as well. Seems The Veronicas took that age old saying "save the best for last" to heart though, cause Mother Mother is by far the best song offered. Off beat verses giving way to a truly memorable chorus is a hard thing not to love.

My favorite songs are Mouth Shut, Leave Me Alone, Heavily Broken, Nobody Wins, and Mother Mother. The Veronicas aren't groundbreaking, anybody who tells you differently is just full of it. But they are good, I'll give them that. If they fully drop the stuck up-ness they sport at the beginning of The Secret Life of... then I'm sure my opinion on them will change right along with them, but until then I'm not completely sure what to think about them.

Summary: Better than I expected, not bad for the under 30 listener
Comment: The first I'd ever heard of The Veronicas was when I got a copy of the Australian TV series Cybergirl (PAL format- get it on eBay)- although the twins had only supporting roles in that series the DVD case promoted them. I eventually found out that they sing (most of their TV appearances appear to be related to promoting their singing career) and looked around for something they'd done.

I didn't expect much but was pleased to find that this CD isn't really too bad. I suppose the teens and 20's group will like it better (I'm 49)but I found the musical accompaniment to be loud and sometimes overwhelming the lyrics. The song lyrics themselves seemed all right, I don't have any favorites, it sounds as though the sisters can actually sing. If you're their age, you might like the CD, if you're old enough to be the parents of the Veronicas at least your kids will have something all right to listen to.

Summary: Well, it's good for babe pop!
Comment: I liked Mouth Shut and Secret. Hopefully they'll continue to develop some more. I heard one of the sisters had vocal surgery, so hopefully they come back from that!

Editorial Reviews:

The Veronicas are Jess and Lisa Origliasso, 20-year-old identical twins from Brisbane, Australia-and they are going to rock your world. Adding a tough edge to teen powerpop, and the looks and savyy to back it up, The Veronicas were signed to an exclusive production deal with Engine Room on the strength of their first demo. With their irresistible debut album, The Secret Life of the Veronicas, written and produced by the likes of Billy Steinberg (Madonna), Clif Magness (Avril Lavigne), Max Martin (Britney Spears), Dr. Luke (Kelly Clarkson), Don Gilmore (Linkin Park) and Toby Gad (Enrique Iglesias), among others, the secret is out about The Veronicas.
