Customer Rating: Summary: Vapid covers, all in a lounge style Comment: Imagine you're attending a sales convention in a moderately large american city, circa about 1989, and you wander into the hotel lounge and there is a reasonably talented combo playing hits of the day at a leisurely tempo (in fact, all at more or less the same tempo), with a female vocalist of limited range and power singing lightly into the microphone. That's what this music sounds like, pretty much every track. There is very little of what I think of as "jazz" in it. Little improvisation or different keys, meters or tempos. This is "lite jazz" at best. Maybe "lite bossa nova" is even more accurate. The first track manages to hold up, since the lyrics support a seductive sex-kittenish treatment. After that, it was extremely vapid. Take the ostinato out of With or Without You, slow it down and whisper it and what do you have? A mediocre featureless cover. When they took a cocktail lounge number like In the Air Tonight and made it even more "lounge," it was more than I could take. And the singer on Purple Rain sounds like a 6th-grader reading off a lyric sheet ("purple rain, purple rain ... purple rain, purple rain .. purple rain, purple RAIN."). That version would make any list of worst covers of all time. Well, convention's over, time to pay up and get to the airport.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Idea, needs more energy Comment: This album is great and the songs picked are great some songs are better than others, my favorite is Don`t you (forget about me) by the stella starlight trio. But I`m more a fussion jazz fanatic so I was expecting some songs not to be too chilly and maybe a little more agressive. I think a couple of songs should be instrumental and performed by different artists to have a good blend. All songs are equally chilly , soft and sexy that`s cool but I thought a more vibrant style should be better for a compilation like this. Anyway it`s a very nice album, you should get it.
Customer Rating: Summary: The 80's goes Jazz... Comment: A great idea, a great selection of songs and artists.
This is a must record for your cocktail parties!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Incredible! Comment: I saw this, and bought it on a whim. I popped it in for the ride home, and WOW! I almost had to pull over to have a martini!
The opening track, "Should I Stay or Should I Go" is stellar. It's hard to believe this was ever anything but a jazz tune -- I love the Clash version, but this just SOUNDS jazz! A couple other tracks are also spectacular, making the CD well worth it.
The only thing that keeps it from being a 5-star (which to me means flawless), in my opinion, is that a couple tracks aren't as good. I'm sorry, but "Like A Virgin" sounded too familiar, too much Madonna was still there. Other tracks were okay, but most are very good. ("In The Air Tonight" and "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This" are some other 5-star tracks, sounding like they've always been jazz tunes!)
All in all, a great CD. I'll be playing this at my next cocktail party!
Customer Rating: Summary: Delightful. Comment: This is an incredible production from some great hits of the 80's converted to Jazz. The song selection is very good and what it's amazing is that some of the songs sound better than the originals, this cd is very good to play any time you want to feel relaxed or it's great to play it as background music in a reunion with friends or at the office. Finally another highlight from this production is that the singers are pretty good, something that is very hard to get when you buy a cd with covered songs from other singers.
Check how good sound Madonna's "LIKE A VIRGIN", Prince's "PURPLE RAIN", Culture Club's "DO YOU REALLY WANT TO HURT ME", U2's "WITH OR WITHOUT YOU" and Guns n' roses's "PATIENCE".
