Summary: A Fine "Company" Indeed From The Best Bluegrass Band I've Heard
Comment: I honestly can't think of when I've heard a bluegrass band play with such empathy and virtuosity. Maybe the last time was more than a decade ago in Tucson, Arizona, but I know I haven't heard anything here in New York City that remotely comes close to The Del McCoury Band. Until last Saturday, when this wonderful band played a great set - which included celebrated banjo musician Bela Fleck on one number - at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. Much of their set consisted of music from this CD and earlier releases from 2001, including a great cover version of a song written by legendary British folk rocker Richard Thompson. Del has a great tenor voice and is a fine guitarist too. But maybe more importantly, his superb musical talents also run in the family, since sons Rob and Ronnie are stellar virtuosos on the banjo and mandolin. I'm not sure if one can say that this is Newgrass music; it's just simply great Bluegrass. For this reason alone I am not surprised to hear that this band has earned countless awards from their peers in Nashville and elsewhere; awards which I am certain they'll continue earning well into the future.

Comment: I would like to review this cd very much but unfortunately I was sent a cd by Greg Russell or some such person. I returned the cd but have not had any further communication from Amazon.....where is my Del McCoury cd......
It has been at least 2 weeks since I returned the WRONG CD.......

Summary: New Songs Right on Target
Comment: I bought this cd for my husband and he loves it. It includes lots of new songs that really ring true for him. Some make him chuckle. He especially likes "Nothin' Special," in which the message is ". . my interest don't fall in monetary desires just a steady dose of passion baby's all I require." "Keep Her While She's There" and you won't have to get her back when she's gone. Also, you'll feel a lot better, "When It Stops Hurtin'." Del McCoury's voice is an acquired taste, but this collection is excellent.

Though the Del McCoury Band has earned renown for its wide-ranging repertoire--drawing from the rock, blues, and folk songbooks for its bluegrass adaptations--The Company We Keep finds the revered vocalist sticking close to his musical roots. McCoury's songwriting collaborations provide autobiographical highlights, from the eternal innocence of "Never Grow Up Boy" to the age-old wisdom of "If Here's Where You Are" ("then here's where you're supposed to be"). Del and his band, including sons Ronnie (mandolin, co-producer) and Rob (banjo), survey a bluegrass range that extends from the Appalachian strains of "Mountain Song" to the instrumental romp through Ronnie's "Seventh Heaven" to the deeply spiritual gospel of "I Never Knew Life." Best of all is the album's centerpiece, "Fathers and Sons," which finds the family band harmonizing on the bonds of blood. While the shifting time signatures of the opening "Nothing Special" serve notice that the music won't be bound by tradition, the album serves to celebrate that tradition and extend it. --Don McLeese
