Summary: For a long summernight
Comment: Imagine a long summernight, when you're sitting outside having a relaxed cooldown after a long, hot day. This music is the perfect companion, just as the original songs were for a cold winternight in a northern town. Some songs are almost unrecognizable from their original recording, so even though you might have listened to these way to often in the 80s, they are still refreshing the way Nouvelle Vague has remastered them.

Summary: New wave gone lounge
Comment: I have to admit I am new to Nouvelle Vague. I have heard of them in magazine but never got around to checking out their music. I finally did this weekend when I found Nouvelle Vague's self-titled album. When I looked at the track list on the back of the cd, I knew I had to hear it, especially since I love Joy Division and Depeche Mode. NOUVELLE VAGUE is an intersting collection of post-punk songs given a lounge make over. I thought the concept was interesting but I found my patience stretched to its limits because the kitschy novelty of remaking popular post-punk songs from the '80s got tiresome. Another aspect I didn't care much for about the music is that Nouvelle Vague took a bunch of distinctive songs and turned them into boring, repetive lounge songs. Every song on the cd lost its distinct sound to the annoying kitschy lounge sound. While I am not overly fond of the cd, there were a few tracks that I did enjoy like "Love Will Tear Us Apart", and "Just Can't Get Enough". I really wanted to like this cd but I just couldn't. Sorry but this concept of turning new wave songs into lounge music is a horrible idea.

Summary: Lounge with spunk
Comment: Or is it punk? Anyway I've got a weak spot for lounge music and this may best, edgiest lounge you'll ever hear. Frankly, I'm not all that familiar with most of the originals so I have no idea how much they've been maimed here. All I know is that the vocals are inspired and impossible to ignore.

Summary: In Love With This Album!
Comment: I absolutely LOVE this album! I listen to many different genres of music but I have to say that this album is one of my ultimate favorite cd's! I don't get tired of listening to it! I'm so glad I was introduced to Nouvelle Vague and I have shared this cd with many friend of mine...I then recently purchased their second album Bande A Part, but I was disappointed however, it's not nearly as good as their first...I love 80's music, Bossa Nova, AND Nu Wave, definetly recommend this cd!

Editorial Reviews:

Recycling the 1980s sound has been in vogue lately, so it's no surprise that the producing team known as Nouvelle Vague would find yet another way to mine the nostalgia for the early `80s, post-punk era. They're doing it bossa nova style.

The disc opens with a rendition of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." It's a charming start, and with a breathy chanteuse on vocals, it's exactly the kind of sound that has some music critics proclaiming (admittedly with a touch of sarcasm) that Nouvelle Vague is the ironic dinner music for the new millennium. Unfortunately, this CD is somewhat less winning as it wears on. "Guns of Brixton" is annoying when done in a loungey mood, and sitting through "Too Drunk to F**k" in the wrong company could certainly ruin the amuse bouche. Nevertheless, the entertaining tracks do outweigh tiresome ones on this release. If this concept sounds like an interesting idea to you, you're bound to get a smile from the execution. --Leah Weathersby
