Customer Rating: Summary: Drifting in the Ether Comment: I don't typically buy 'nice things'. I'm a fledgling graduate student that frowns at the bits of iron that scrape off of my pots and into my Mac 'n Chez with each use. However, last summer I used a bonus to buy some new Bose headphones as a treat to myself, and this was the first album I wanted to test them with. This is one of -those- albums.
To be honest, I can only name 2-3 songs titles off the top of my head and probably wouldn't be able to put the tracks in their proper order. I think that emphasizes the fact that this piece does not grip you in a particular moment and make you replay that last song necessarily.
This album would be in my personal top ten, though. The repetitive waves of droning guitar recall the haze-ensconced cover art, which is hard to separate as a visual representation of the music. It has been my experience that whatever is wresting your thoughts, Eluvium is able to assuage any neural cacophony.
While I think it a bit strong to refer to a CD as a 'spiritual experience', I would be lying if I said I didn't ever find my mind wandering into certain philosophical realms when 'One' comes on my iPod.
So if you're looking for something to put on when you're typing up that report simply as a non-invasive background accompaniment or you're going on a solo hiking excursion in the Andes, I would recommend you give this a whirl.
RIYL: Plume, And Their Refinement of the Decline
Customer Rating: Summary: Very good electronica/ambient album Comment: I just discovered this artist and I am very pleased. This album consists of pleasant loops and sounds that form a gently hypnotic whole. The artist finds a groove and sets it loose while coloring it in various ways. Very tasteful stuff.
Customer Rating: Summary: Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm Comment: Guys this is just for eluvium fanatics..it's a good album but it's a seriously difficoult album..i am a fan but it's still hard for me to listen to this record often..i suggest ELUVIUM'S ''COPIA'' more than this one..to me the most stunning freakin' awesome devastating song of this album is TAKEN..the rest is pure ambient..good ambient..but only for fanatics
Customer Rating: Summary: a dive into emotions Comment: Temporary residence, the record label that holds eluvium described Matthew Cooper's music as "walls of sound that are so emotionally gripping that you might think its coming from inside you" and I personally think they are absolutely right. The opening track of talk amongst the trees, "new animals from the air" sets the mood for the rest of the album. The strong sounds fuel a whirlwind of emotions either uplifting or depressing triggering thoughts and inspirations. This album acquires a certain mood for it to really be appreciated, for me this is an open minded and personally productive state of mind. When listening to this album I found myself absorbing every sound that was being thrown at me and loosing myself in a kind of trance, really taking into account everything that the songs were made to do. As eluvium's music is all instrumental the cd booklet is without lyrics but this is compensated by some amazing short poems written by Phillip Cooper. The poems fit perfectly well with the music and only add as jigsaw pieces to the picturesque thoughts that the sounds provide. Talk amongst the trees is a record that puppeteers your heart, making its strings do as it wants, this album is definitely worth buying but only to be listened to with the most open of minds.
Customer Rating: Summary: gorgeous Comment: If ambient music is your thing or if you enjoy long, drawn-out and beautiful soundscapes, than the new Eluvium is for you and will most likely end up being one of your favorite albums of the year. I don't know how this guy manages to release an album a year but I hope he keeps the pace.

Editorial Reviews:

Working with a limited palette of guitars and piano, Eluvium dropped 'Lambent Material,' a masterpiece of aquatic drones and fractured neoclassical compositions, in 2002. He followed it a year later with a brief album of solo piano suites that turned everyone's expectations upside-down. Not quite classical and certainly not ambient in the common sense, 'An Accidental Memory in the Case of Death' garnered the kind of jaw-dropping acclaim that typically overlooks like-minded minimalist artists. This was a breath of fresh air for Matthew Cooper, allowing him to dive deeper than ever before. Beneath the cold water glow, 'Talk Amongst the Trees' is a soundtrack for exploring the surface of your own ocean, slow-moving like the sand that runs through your fingers and incandescent like the most unique creatures of the sea.
