Comment: This may JUST be my all time favorite kd lang work to date, ( and I have them ALL) Her voice is just ..well, it defies my ability to describe. I think the best word would be: PURE. This cd came in the mail after a particularly harrowing day for me, and it absolutely had the power to utterly transform my mood. I love the quiet depth and the non religious spirituality to her choices. I LOVE her collaborations with Jane Siberry, and her original song " Love is Simple" will be played at my wedding ( should I ever decide to do THAT for a THIRD time! ) Her voice can be sweet as a harp, swoop to aching, sultry depths, then turn into a powerhouse. I recently had the privilege of seeing her perform live, and my mouth was agape the WHOLE time.Especially during Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah. What a show! And yet she remains humble and ever barefoot on stage and true to her roots and to herself. What a gift this amazing human being shares with us. Thank you, kd.

Comment: Though this is an older CD of kd lang's, I just ordered it because of circulating YouTube of her performing HALLELUJAH. I just loved it so much that I played it daily for a week, then ordered Hymns...

Was it homesickness that compelled longtime Los Angeles resident k.d. lang to fashion her one-woman campaign for north-of-the-border nationalism, or just plain good sense? All Canadian content has long been a mainstay of the Canadian Broadcasting System, but few have selected their material with such a fine hand and a high aesthetic. The expatriate singer has taken great pains to create a sophisticated homage to her Canadian roots, elegantly reinterpreting 11 songs penned by some of her more illustrious countrymen (and women) such as Jane Siberry, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, and Leonard Cohen. The idiosyncratic chanteuse turns Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" into an aching monochromatic lament, exploring new tributaries of pain that didn't exist in the original, while recasting Neil Young's "Helpless" into a haunting anthem of memory and comfort, all the while sounding anything but helpless. A gorgeous love letter to her brethren, complete with an intelligent and understated orchestration. --Jaan Uhelszki
