Customer Rating: Summary: diggin' deeper Comment: Being a musician myself, this is a very enjoyable 10 cd package. An excellent showcase for the forgotten masters that influenced the eras of music that came afterwards. I am very fascinated by the "raw and grit" of the recordings. These CD's are definitely essential for the musicologist. Doug Smith,Co.
Customer Rating: Summary: 10 hours of truly excellent acoustic blues Comment: In terms of pure listening pleasure this CD set is probably the absolute best value for money currently available for 1930s-60s acoustic blues. It contains 200 classical recordings, dubbed from good to excellent masters, of over 20 vintage blues acts. Most of these are played on acoustic instruments, except for some of John Lee Hooker's earliest (and most brilliant) solo tracks.
Apart from listing the tracks and artists, the set comes with absolutely no documentation, so don't expect to find out anything about the lives and careers of the artists - other than what the songs themselves will tell you. Also, the 10 CDs in this box appear to be completely randomly arranged: none of this was sorted by year, artist, place, theme, style or instrumentation.
The upside to this lack of any overall structure is that the set contains endless variation, contrary to the stylistic uniformity of more typical prewar blues CDs devoted to one single act or artist. Even if you already have an extensive collection of the latter, you'll find this set excellent value for taking to work or bringing along on the road. And if you've just started to get interested in this kind of music, then you'll find no better sampler for exploring the wonderful gems and musical genius of early blues!
