Spotlight customer reviews:

Customer Rating: Summary: Yes, LP version! Comment: The transition from LP to the original CD was botched. The song Even Cowgirls Get the Blues got its first verse cut off, giving it an odd start. This remastered CD has the complete song that was on the LP. The sound of this CD seems a bit fuller than the other one. I guess the two extra songs on the CD justifies a new release, but I didn't care for them. The restored song on the new one is reason enough.
Customer Rating: Summary: Underproduced! Comment: Emmylou's "Quarter Moon in a Ten Cent Town" was greatly produced and mixed. It was a great album. After that Emmylou decided to return to country roots. It was a good idea but unfortunatelity the songs seem to have almost no production at all. Some of the songs are great, like "Sister's Coming Home" and "Save the Last Dance for Me" but they could have even better if they would have tried to produce it a little bit more. I'm a big fan of many Emmylou's albums, like "Pieces of the Sky" but this album was a disappointment. Emmylou has a great voice but if you compare this to other 70's albums you notice the difference.
Stars: Sister's Coming Home, Beneath Still Waters, Sorrow in the Wind
Customer Rating: Summary: Not her best Comment: Not worth buying the whole album, though I love her (and bought it),. For this period, get the Collected Bests (there have been several versions over the years.
Customer Rating: Summary: Emmylou at her best Comment: This remains one of my favorite country albums, and with new bonus tracks, it's just that much better. Not only does Emmylou cover some of country's classics here, but this CD is extremely well-polished, and musically one of her finest works. "Sorrow In The Wind", with help from Sharon and Cheryl White, is one of the unheralded gems on this collection, and "Hickory Wind" and "Rough And Rocky" are excellent, soulful pieces that showcase her range and the sweet, soulful sound of her voice. "Sister's Coming Home" with Tanya Tucker is a rollicking fast-stepper, and her rendition of "Even Cowgirls Get The Blues" remains the best I've heard of that song. If you're new to Emmylou Harris, and looking for a sampling of her work without investing huge bucks, this is a perfect addition to your collection. If you want a more detailed, thorough portrait of Emmylou, go with "Portraits", a 3-disc boxed set, which covers most of the highlights of her career.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent CD Comment: In my opinion this is the best album made by Emmylou Harris and one of the best you can buy in the field of country music period. I have never understood why Emmylou has received so little notice in the mainstream media or press, because she is one of the best ever.

Editorial Reviews:

With its spare, acoustic-based instrumentation, this 1979 Grammy winner is one of Emmylou's most traditional efforts. Among its down-home offerings is the #1 country single "Beneath Still Waters." Includes new liner notes and two previously unreleased bonus tracks.
