Summary: I wish I liked this.
Comment: Anyone who has read my previous reviews of Manny Manuel's merengue albums knows what a huge fan I am of his singing, charisma, and the quality of the music he sings. After a 3 year break following the sensational Lleno de Vida in 1999, Manny released a fairly mediocre pop/club album. Now Manny has done an 180 degree turn with this album of old time bolero.
Well, to start off, i am not a fan of old time bolero, except maybe if i were sitting in a night club. I do think you would have to be a life long Hispanic to really love this kind of music!
Beyond that, I hoped Manny would bring something special to this form. Unfortunately, in my opinion, he does not. I don't find his singing style and voice lends itself to the peculiar phrasing of bolero. Throughout, he sounds very arch and strained, and frankly not particularly pleasant to listen to. Considering that I view him as one of the best merengue (and even salsa) singers who has ever lived, this is quite disappointing.
Manny has since released an album of old time big band music "Nostalgia." which is even less satisfying than this. His voice does not sound well at all.
I am truly hoping this is a function of not singing the right style for his voice. This is quite crucial, actually, there are few, if any singers, however good, who can sing all styles. (Milly Quezada comes the closest of anyone I think of).
So Manny, a new merengue album is eagerly awaited - you are the best!

Comment: I got the chance to meet Manny personally after a small concert he gave at the Governor's Home in San Juan, while he was performing songs from this album. He is a nice guy too ...
Manny has always showed his talent through a diverse choice of music ... his last 2 CD's have been with the Bolero music, in which he definitely shows his romantic side.
This album features some songs already performed by many other artist, but Manny presents them in a new way ... he is a great singer, who deserves the best ...
If you are a romantic-freak like I am ... you will definitely enjoy this CD till the end ... Manny is still the BEST ...
