Spotlight customer reviews:

Customer Rating: Summary: Great collection (lousy packaging) Comment: This is easily the best Diana Ross collection both with the Supremes and also solo, issued to date. Greatest hits every one, based on No. 1 status, with no filler and very well mastered to my ears. Not a single duff song in the whole selection
Why then the reason for 4 stars? Simply the dreadful "eco-friendly packaging" - within a few uses the insert for holding the CD in place fell apart! So I ended up doing a bit of my own recycling replacing it with an old black plastic insert from an old CD case being glued onto the cover. So be warned!
Customer Rating: Summary: Great! Comment: This CD is a must for anyone who wants to own the best of the Supremes. The Diana Ross solo songs are a bonus.
Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent! Comment: One of the greatest CD's to purchase to bring back memories of the 60's. Needs to be in every music lovers library. Excellent!
Customer Rating: Summary: The Supreme Supremes Comment: Listening to recordings of the original Supremes is a bittersweet trip down memory lane. The vocal talent of background singer Florence Ballard (who died a pauper while Diana Ross went on to become a solo recording artist and an award-winning actress) is apparent. Flo's soprano voice was distinctive and her absence from the group ended the unique spirit of this fine trio. It's interesting to note that the voices of Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard grew less prominent as the career of Diana Ross was pushed center stage. I don't like re-mastered recordings; I prefer the original versions of songs. I think "You Can't Hurry Love" is the finest cut of this collection. The Supremes (and many other Motown recording artists) owe their amazing success to the superb songwriting team of Holland Dozier and Holland.
Customer Rating: Summary: A must-have for fans Comment: I've never been a Supremes fan but any serious record collector is
more or less obliged to have at least a "greatest hits" collection for
several reasons: 1-It certainly brings back memories from the mid 60's
(1964-1967) 2- It was the American answer to the British invasion (together with the Beach Boys) and 3- They were the most popular girls
group ever although, to my opinion, not the best. I prefered the
Crystals, the Ronettes and the Shangri-Las (Phil Spector's Wall Of
Sound). It's an outstanding fact though, that 43 years later one hears
for the first time all these well known songs in stereo if you never
had any Supremes record before. A real must for the Supremes fans because
I doubt there's something better on the market by this super girls group.
As a special "treat" it also holds Diana Ross's biggest hits as a solo
singer. What else can you ask for? Nothing, it's all there!

Editorial Reviews:
|
In the path of enormously popular collections of number one singles by Elvis and the Beatles comes this crammed (seconds shy of the 80-minute mark) disc from another pop-culture icon, Diana Ross & the Supremes. 14 Diana Ross/Supremes tracks appear in some of their most vivid sound ever, while the post-Ross Supremes get their due with "Stoned Love." Ross' Hollywood years make for the weakest music here ("Touch Me in the Morning," "Endless Love"), but disco smashes "Upside Down," "I'm Coming Out," and "The Boss" prove as smart, canny, and enduring as Supremes 45s like "You Keep Me Hangin' On" and "Reflections." The contemporary, yet already dated, remix of "Hangin' On" at album's end suggests, in fact, that Ross might make one more dance-floor comeback if paired with the right behind-the-scenes team. Basement Jaxx, anyone? --Rickey Wright
