Customer Rating: Summary: Just BRILLANT Comment: Andre Rieu & the Johann Strauss orchestra in Dublin is just fantastic and outstanding, probably more than in previous DVDs. Dublin is my Alma Mater and I grew up in Medical School there at the time John Sheehan & the Dubliners were peaking in popularity after their huge success at The Royal Albert Hall,London in 1968. It was nice to see the usual lively John(as guest artist here) again, but with a different beard colour, taking Andre and the Johann Strauss orchestra along in 'Marino waltz'(John's own composition) & 'Irish Washerwoman'.I felt the same contagious, pleasant and cheerful shivers as the audience had during these interpretations.
I recognised and loved the short sceneries on the DVD like 'The Temple Bar & the Guinness pints' 'O'Connell bridge over the Lifey river,Grafton street and Trinity College, the greenery of 'The Emerald Isle' etc.
All the other interpretations are a very carefully chosen repertoire of well known tunes in Ireland and the usual 'Andre at his best' violin/orchestra favourites . The interpretation of 'The Waltz of all the waltzes of the world' was beautifully done with a most remarkable humourous ingenuity 'A la Andre' added to it.
My personal five star tune 'The last rose' is well interpreted as an entirely instrumental number though I missed Suzan Erens' vocal interpetation. I am a bit disappointed that Suzan did not interprete this one or any other number in this concert though she is seen in the choir at the back of the orchestra. As we have seen in previous compilations e.g. 'Flying Dutchman', Suzan is really at her best in this tune- This tune fits her and she fits the tune! She really gets locked in the audience's hearts with her vocal interpretation.
The Titanic film theme music 'My heart will go on' is indeed most appropriate in this concert in Dublin as the actual film gives us a glimpse of the Irish migration westward across the Atlantic in that tragic year of 1912.Besides, the ship had about fifteen thousand Irish workers to build it.Also, after Cherbourg, the last port of call ever for that unsinkable ship was Cobh in the South of Ireland (at that time known as Queensland). It was from there that it sailed away on the 11April1912 for its tragic end 4000 meters under the sea. The flute comes out beautifully in conveying the appropriate emotions to the audience as it also does in 'The last rose of summer'.
The quality of the pictures and sound on an HD video player & LCD with sound surround are just outstanding though the DVD itself is not HD.
I personnally prefer a vertical listing and numbering of the various tunes on the back of the DVD box rather than the way it is written.
After this concert I feel Andre and the Johann Strauss orchestra should spread their wings to be a music ambassador to other places of the planet and lead the way ,to quote him, "To make the Planet a different place" through music. They have the necessary appropriate talents to modify the hearts & minds of their audience irrespective of age.... .
