Customer Rating: Summary: Excellent purchase Comment: This CD provides a terrific overview of Texas music. Granted, the listener may not like everything s/he hears, but given the broad range of musical styles and offerings, such a result is unavoidable. The CD definitely informs and entertains. Then you can go out and specialize for subsequent purchases!
Customer Rating: Summary: Something for Texas to brag about Comment: Even though this is an anthology album containing selections from other CDs made by Texas artists, all this music was new to me. I don't think it's as good as the Tex-Mex edition of this series, which offers a greater variety of styles. (This one has too many traditional blues style cuts and Grade-B vocals that on a few occasions give it a generic sound). However, there are some cuts on this CD that I think make it essential listening. I flipped over Delbert McClinton's "Same Kind of Crazy." I love its sentiment and its exuberance. It really expresses the joy of a particular kind of infatuation. I could listen to this one over and over again. I was similarly impressed with Slaid Cleaves' lyrically very sophisticated "Broke Down." Cleaves' sensitive yet manly performance is also appealing. It took me a couple of listenings to appreciate Marcia Ball's "She's So Innocent," but it has become one of my favorite cuts. At first it sounded like a bad lounge act, but when I listened more closely, I found the wistful lyrics really interesting, and Ms. Ball's jazzy arrangement and performance give the whole CD sophistication it might not have had otherwise. Ditto for Asleep at the Wheel's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie." There are also cuts from such internationally famous Texas performers as Willie Nelson, Boz Scaggs and The Dixie Chicks. (Where's Lyle Lovett?) It's all quite entertaining. This CD and the Tex-Mex edition ("Don't Mess With La Musica de Texas") of this series are must-haves for anyone who is even mildly curious about contemporary Texas music. The "Don't Mess With Texas Music" series is very impressive. Texas rightly has something to brag about here.
Customer Rating: Summary: Don't Miss 'Don't Mess With Texas' music Comment: Good party music featuring a great range of Texas artists which showcases diverse music styles from country to blues; makes a great gift and supports a good cause, Texas music education programs.
Customer Rating: Summary: Great Texas Collection Comment: This CD brings together great performances by various Texas musicians in a well thought out selection of excellent songs.
