Customer Rating: Summary: Early Bluetech Comment: I came to this after encountering his later work which builds on this and adds new layers of complexity and texture. Definitely worth a listen.
Customer Rating: Summary: You Like Chill?? Buy This CD!! Comment: Love this music. Awesome Chill Trax!! You like downtempo electronica, then buy this CD. WORD!!
Customer Rating: Summary: The Recorded Conversions of Hyper-Intelligent Computers on Various Psychedelics Comment: The best way I can describe this music is pleasant, smooth, incredibly complex and very futuristic. With a blend of real instruments being played beautiful and high-detail, non-electronic sounding synthetics; its quite an different listening experience. Its a cross between what computers would say to eachother if they could hallucinate on psychedelics and dance music for aliens to listen to while they cruised the cosmos. The reason why I call it "pleasant" is because of the huge variety of electronic tones and beeps that pleasantly massage the ears. Theres no hard-hitting "boom-boom-boom" kicks here, just pleasant drum patterns to send you floating thru the air. And get this, on the inspiration list, Bluetech put Shpongle as the thrid music artist that influenced him. Great electronic music grown from great experiential
psy-trance.
Bluetech is smooth in the sense that none of the songs contain harsh,
rough tones found in artists like Aphex Twin.
The bass is so smooth that if you close your eyes, you feel like your floating on top of smooth and gentle clouds of low frequency notes. Great examples of smooth tracks are some of my favorite tracks, the first three on Prima Materia. They sound like what a profound psychedelic experience would sound like in a digital, high-tech, ultra-future format.
By far the best way to describe this amazing type of techno is that its incredibly complex. The amount of
detail to the stereo effects simulates sounds flying in your mind, swaying from left to right between your ears.
There are so many different-sounding instruments, both synthenic and real, that have been cut-up, filtered, warped, slow-downed or somehow modified with very futuristic-sounding, high-quality special effects. However, I do admit the sounds do get a little werid, even for me. For example, listen to "White Magnesia" at time 2:43-3:00 and you'll know.
The beats and tones seem to randomly appear out-of-nowhere and yet it still has proper rhythm and consistent patterns. It is unpredictable music, hard to see whats going to appear next on the audio horizon. For me, the more complex a song is, the psychedelic it becomes. The song named "Burning Waters" is by far the most psychedelic song on Prima Materia. If you like using psychedelics, then listen to this song at your peak and it will launch you into another dimension. This song is also the only song I've heard which uses a wooden frog rasp as part of the song. When you rub the back of the woodenso frog, it has a und like when you click your tounge on the roof of your mouth. It sounds Very cool and its quite appropriate for the song.
This album is very special to me so I only listen
to it while on psychedelics, at night inside a dark room, or other special moments in time.
Its Mystical Techno for Magical Thoughts.
Customer Rating: Summary: another level Comment: +++++ 5 stars +++++
This is some of the most original, creative genuis ever to be captured. There are some people who just rehash a genre and add one or two new twists, which, of course, can be good and is to be expected. However, Bluetech's work is unique, and most artists would be lucky to capture even a tenth of the personal muse that is apparent on this album. If you like exploring the world of experience, and are not afraid of letting go of the familiar, get this album. To me, it is a trip inside raw breathing consciousness and through the colorful landscape of being. Beautiful.
Ps. I love reading reviews where envy makes someone put genuis down. ROFL
Customer Rating: Summary: Good God its Horrible elevator music ambience Comment: It looks like Evan Bluetech got an $80 yamaha keyboard for his birthday and unfortunately, decided to plug it into his computer and make an album. To put it mildly, the production value on this album is awful, its essentially a collection of cheesy ambient sound FX, strung together with the aimless meandering of maddening elevator music. Ya, there are some mild dub elements, but this whole album is just "laid back" to the point of being even worse than something like Enya. (actually, this stuff makes Enya sound like house or happy hardcore by comparison)
Don't get me wrong here, while I'm not a huge downtempo ambient fan, I still respect talent when I see it. I have "Subconsious" by phutureprimitive, and while it doesn't blow my hair back like Shpongle, Hallucinogen, Infected Mushroom, or anything by OTT, Simon and Raja Ram, it does have a really smooth sound that works really well, despite not being that well layered. My main criticism of prima materia though, is that it just never goes anywhere, its boring, bland computer game background music. It really sounds like it was just cut straight out of a space simulation game... a very tedious space simulation game. (Perhaps X2 by enlight software?)
The other thing, is it has very weak underlying ambient melodies. It just has cheesy, yamaha keyboard sound FX riding on this bland, mind-numbing computer game sound track.
I was considering giving this maybe 2 stars for the fact that he does change up the sound (although still bland)so that it doesn't get too repetitive, but I can't get the idea out of my head that he is very poorly trying to rip off some of Shpongle's effects. Even worse than that, I dug out an old VHS copy of "Beyond the Mind's Eye", and its horrifingly similar in how you could just interchange the sound track from that with this album. ("Beyond the Mind's Eye" was a showcase of computer animation put together in 1995)
Basically, if you have more than 5 CD's in your collection, and are looking for music that doesn't bring back memories of being on hold with your credit card company, check out anything on the UK twisted label.

Evan Bluetech is to Southern California as ambient is to dub. With a background in classical and improvisational piano, he has honed his wares with yearly performances at the infamous Burning Man festival and other outdoor gigs. He serves as Music Director and performer for the living ambient gallery Project Cathedral in San Diego and has contributed his work to the award winning Continuums Project as well as numerous television commercial soundtracks. He is also one of the founding members of the art collective Native:State, a group of quirky circus performers, DJ's fire dancers and music makers. Bluetech melds the electronic with the organic, utilizing custom-built Reaktor instruments and software-based synthesizers. His traditional classical training brings a warmth and musicality to the precision and detail of his extremely fresh electronic style and sound. Besides ambient dub influences, Bluetech also borrows from the worlds of IDM and experimental electronica. Inspired by artists like The Orb, Sounds From The Ground and Higher Intelligence Agency, Bluetech delivers a vivid distinct sound that is both modernistic and retrospective.
