Summary: Great songs well sung
Comment: I have been a fan of Kate Rusby for a number of years, and this album has quickly become my favorite. Her music tends to tell stories in beautiful song, and in them are found all the raw and agonal emotion of traditional folk ballads. Even where she composes her own songs, these raw emotions often remain in the lyrics encapsulated in her beautiful voice.
One of my favorite songs on this album is "I Wish" which is a portrait of the regret of a girl who has become pregnant by a man who has since moved on to someone else. Here she uses words of a traditional song with her own melody to create a fantastic effect.
Similarly the tragedy in "The Drowned Lovers" which features a curses by a mother (and in one interpretation even murder) against her son and meddling by another mother which lead to both lovers drowned in the Clyde, encapsulates this tragedy in beautiful singing.
Not all songs are heavy though. Sir Eglamore documents a knight who fights a dragon to a stalemate (and wounds the dragon but loses his sword), and The Sweet Bride is about a woman who rides off with an otherworldly figure (similar to Mannanan Mac Lir of Irish myth) to wed him.
All in all, a very strong set of songs well done. Highly recommended and shows the true potential of traditional music.

Summary: What a voice
Comment: I am a sucker for a beautiful melody well sung. "The Wild Goose" and "Bold Riley" are each heartbreakingly beautiful. The whole album is, but those two spoke to me. What is it about these British female folk singers? Kate is right up there with Maddy Prior, June Tabor, Sandy Denny, and all the rest. This album was my introduction to Kate Rusby--I picked it up on a whim. I wish I'd gotten it sooner.

Summary: LOVELY MUSIC
Comment: I came across this CD quite by accident, recognized through my love for the early days of Fairport Convention. Not sure who else here as commented about this, but Kate Rusby's voice strikes very close to what might be imagined as that of a very young and too soon lost Sandy Denny. Not in its character, but in all of its purity. Kate's voice and technique seem epitomes of the subtle, delicate and sonorous, almost childlike in its breath. She is able to apply a very discreet vibrato in a way that seems wholly unique to these ears, and her selection of traditional and new material is supremely tasteful. While there seems nothing so adventurous here as the landmark Liege and Lief, there is also nothing lacking in that sometimes melancholic, sometimes exuberant beauty, or in her startlingly clear and present voice.

Comment: I bought this album for one track - Maid of Llanwellen - but I have found all the songs to be enchanting. Highly recommended.

Comment: I have now three of Kate cds and love them. 10 is lovely because it honors her ten years of singing professionally. There are songs for her last cds and some have new versions. All I have to say is that once you listen to Kate Rusby you cannot get enough.

On 10, a celebration of Kate Rusby's first decade as a recording artist, she reminds us once again that it's possible to sing ancient ballads about brave knights, fair maidens, rustic villagers, and all the other denizens of Folk Song Land with an immediacy and emotional intensity that are completely modern. Four of the 15 songs here were culled from her earlier CDs; two new songs, "I Wish" and "Over You Now," were composed by Rusby; and two are live recordings. The remaining seven tracks are new versions of previously recorded songs, including "The Recruited Collier," the first song her mother taught her, and "The Wild Goose," a raucous sea shanty reinvented as a gentle meditation on longing. Rusby has been performing these selections for years now, and her new takes on them reveal a restless artist searching for a different path to the heart of familiar songs. She is accompanied by an excellent group of musicians, including fiddler John McCusker, guitarist Ian Carr, and accordionist Andy Cutting. Their playing is spare but each note is perfectly placed. 10 beautifully sums up Kate Rusby's first decade as a professional musician, while suggesting that the best is yet to come. --Michael Simmons
