Customer Rating: Summary: Greatest Hard Rock album of ALL TIME!!! Comment: The details have all been stated very well but I absolutely had to concur.
I have felt for decades that there is NO OTHER album ever made that more clearly captures the raw majesty of HARD ROCK music! Back in the day this was labeled "Punk", as well as "Heavy Metal" before those genres were fully developed, but this is the Mothership of all Hard Acid Rock music!
Mark Farner's fuzz guitar overload is brilliantly raw, while the rhythm section of Mel Schacher on Bass and Don Brewer on Drums has NEVER been topped in all Hard Rock history! And Yes, Mel is the God of all Bass players. His basslines are hypnotic, and LOUD, and You will follow and focus on them throughout! I agree that when the band decided to take a much more commercial turn we forever lost a GREAT Hard Rock band. Even though it was the original band plus the addition of keyboardist Craig Frost it really was (sadly) a completely different sound. But we do have this absolutely brilliant testament of raw, Hard Rock PERFECTION!! This is the one! If You have only one GRAND FUNK cd, it has to be this one!!!
This is a PERFECT Hard Rock album!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Relive the Live Album! Comment: Classic Grand Funk at its finest! All the frenetic synergy of America's premier power trio doing what they do best- delivering the goods via their home-brew of raw and gritty garage rock- fueled by the high octane of the crowd!
Live album is truly what it is- a LIVE album (not bastardized by studio production tricks as prevalent on subsequent artist's "live" albums in forthcoming years). In this listener's opinion, the talents of GFR have always shone through a little brighter on their Live releases.
This is live, loud, gritty music- warts and all! This is rock and roll! This is Grand Funk Railroad!
Customer Rating: Summary: Oh yeah!!! Comment: Are you kidding me??? I cut my teeth on these guys rock and roll. I sat down on Christmas day with my sister and we rocked our way through the whole set...incredible energy! A MUST HAVE for every GFR fan!!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Nostalgia To The n'th Power Comment: Hearing cuts from this album and then googling "Mark Farner" on the internet and seeing what he looks like now (like the fifth California Raisin) is a grim reminder that age robs you of all but your memories. Grand Funk Live dates from the time in my life when all things were still possible, and the road stretched ahead forever. I had previously been a big CCR fan, and I guess I still am, but when a friend dropped this album on the turntable, John Fogerty and the Poorboys were sucking dust. I never got to see Grand Funk in concert, but video clips suggest their live show must have been a total sensory experience that would stay with you for life. Those who have pointed out that Mark Farner wasn't the best guitarist are perfectly correct: he wasn't technically polished. Although Farner was the star of the show, I doubt the band would have worked without Mel Schacher and Don Brewer. I don't mean without a bass player and a drummer - I mean those two specific individuals. Mel Schacher was one of the best bass players ever, and he knew how to generate fills for those dead spots when the lead kicks in. His progressions were some of the most inventive for the instrument. Don Brewer wasn't a flashy drummer, but he had a beat like a metronome; rock solid. That's invaluable in a trio, because if the drummer speeds up, everybody speeds up, and there's a terrible temptation to do that when you're playing live.
For me, these guys defined the seventies, and I can't think about that time without remembering how I used to play this album so loud that my Mom's tacky wall ornaments rattled. Good times, man - good times.
Customer Rating: Summary: The Original GFR Comment: I had put off for years buying the individual GFR CD's. I am old enough to have them all on LP and actually saw GFR 'live" in person back in 1971. These boys could rock. I bought a couple of the Grand Funk Hits compilations a few years ago, but as one who loves the older hard hitting GFR I can just not get into the "newer" bubble gum rock Grand Funk .......Locomotion, etc. Then when looking through a closet where my LP's are stored I was reminded of the intensity of the original GFR. I then found this CD on Amazom and bought it. And am I glad. Reminds me of being there. Good sound, good quality, excellent old time being there feel. I really hate the way things worked out between Terry Knight and GFR because I think they had a great thing going. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a real taste of the older GFR without having to buy the individual discs. You won't be disappointed.
