Customer Rating: Summary: The ultimate Opeth album Comment: Although it is difficult to rank Opeth's albums (because they're all incredible), I would argue that this album is one of the greatest albums they ever made. "Harvest" and "The Drapery Falls" are amazingly gracious (if you like them, consider getting Alcest's "Souvenirs d'Un Autre Monde"). Then comes "Black Water Park", a very powerful and epic song.
This special edition comes with an extra CD, which includes two new songs ("Still day beneath the sun" and "Patterns in the ivy II") and a video of "Harvest"). If you're an Opeth fan, it's worth the extra cost.
Customer Rating: Summary: Amazing! Comment: In my initial approach to metal with non-clean vocals, I was very turned off. The vocals, to me, were an enormous distraction, that made the music underneath difficult to enjoy.
And then I found Opeth. This album is a stunning mix of clean and death vocals, over a similarly stunning mix of brutal metal and soothing, almost lullaby-esque melodies. This leads to a very compelling album. I've always described this band's work as "If Pink Floyd played metal...," because their compositions are incredibly complex, well thought out, and performed to perfection. Always changing, and never boring, Opeth have really set an incredibly high bar with Blackwater Park...one that even they will have difficulty reaching.
Where possible, I do recommend picking up the Special Edition.
Customer Rating: Summary: Opeths Blackwater Park Comment: This may be one of the best Metal albums there is. Opeth seem to have a great skill as song writers, and this album proves that more than no other. The first track we hear is titled "The Leper Affinity". It is a great way to start your journey into the blackwater park. Mixes all the aspects you will hear on this album, and there is also a beautiful piano at the end of it. The next song is "Bleak". The lyrics are great, and the riff's are killer. The third track is "Harvest". this is the lightest song on the album. Stays the same about all the way through but keeps you interested. Mikael shows off his clean vocals more on this song and they are amazing. The next track is a big Fan favorite. It is called "The Drapery Falls". It's is a great mixture of beauty and horror. Next we have "Dirge for November". This track start off slow and very tragic sounding but then kicks into anger. The singer has a great way of expressing emotion through his music. Now, for the heaviest track on the album, "The Funeral Portrait". This song has the best riff's of the whole album. The vocal are so aggressive, and the band is just all around great on this song. The next track is a short instrumental and the guitar work is VERY similar to the guitar work on "Dirge for November", but I think they did this on purpose, as like a flashback or something. There is piano that blends in very well on this track also. Last but not least, we have the title track "Blackwater Park" and this is what the whole album has been working up to. The intro just kicks in the chest and goes on from there. The Riffs are very catchy and about 5 and a half minutes into this song, you hear the best growl vocals Mikael has ever gave. Classic way to end a classic Metal album.
Customer Rating: Summary: The "Devil's Diaphragm" SUX and ruins everything it touches!! Comment: I have heard Death metal growl-style vocals referred to as "The Devil's Diaphragm" so that is what I mean by the above. For the record I HATE IT and find the style more nauseating than the worst attitude posturing rap garbage!!! They are the primary reason I could never get into the whole Death-Metal (and similar) genres and, in most cases, would rather listen to static!!!! And, with most of the bands, they have no real talent for singing so I guess this is all they can do!!
But Opeth is different!! The music is GREAT, they have a LOT of talent and the guy obviously can sing when he wants to so I really don't get it. When I first heard this CD I wondered if he was "in character" or something but, now having heard several other Opeth CDs, every Opeth CD is like this (except one, so I read...might have to check that one out). In fact, if the music wasn't so magnificent I probably would have sold the CD and never listened to them again.
Bottom line, if it wasn't for "The Devil's Diaphragm" I would have given this 5 stars, the music alone certainly deserves it, but the vocals are so annoying to me that it knocks off not just one, but 2 stars!!! But...if you like well made heavy music....by all means check it out and decide for yourself!!
Customer Rating: Summary: Masterpiece! Comment: As a lover of many different types of music from rock to classical to reggae to hip hop and everything in between, I must say that this album is a masterpiece. It is a true work of art. It sucks you in and takes you away to another place, it is truly hypnotizing. It gets better with age and repeated listens. At times it is angry and aggressive, other times it is beautiful and peaceful. One of the greatest albums of any genre, ever. Only true music fans will apreciate this though, this isnt for the casual FM radio listener. The only thing better is the new Ashley Simpson record...yeah right!!!
