Customer Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Comment: Pete Seeger is a national treasure but also is our national conscience. In these songs and in nearly everything else he does Pete holds up a mirror to us.
"Waist deep in the big muddy" is as relevant today as it ever was.
Every song on this is great but since they are live recordings sometimes the recording quality falls a little short. That shouldn't dissuade anyone because Pete Seeger is probably always been at his best with a live audience.
Customer Rating: Summary: brought back very good memories Comment: i've been a fan of Pete Seeger for 50 or more years. I very much enjoyed this CD and have had fun introducing Pete to my hubby. I really enjoy listening to it. tyvm Marsha
Customer Rating: Summary: Memories Comment: Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits is a collection of songs that were sung in the 60's. Listening to the album brought me back to a time of hope for a kinder, fairer world. Some songs were serious and some were just fun.
Customer Rating: Summary: Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits Comment: This recording was one of my favorites. When I sold all of my LPs, I was so sure I'd replace every single one w/ a CD. Of course I didn't. But the PBS show on Seeger reminded me that I wanted to hear these songs again.
If Seeger's story, his patriotism, or dignity and decency moved you, this is a good 'starter' for a Seeger collection.
Customer Rating: Summary: A good set of selections featuring Pete Seeger at his best Comment: This CD represents one set of Pete Seeger's most well known works. No single CD can encompass the broad body of Seeger's work. But this does provide a sense of his art. Seeger wrote some of the songs; some were created by other artists. But he was able to make them his own. As one listens to the sings, there are a few basic characteristics: simplicity of his singing, simplicity of his guitar work, and a genuine earnestness.
"Little Boxes" was not one of his own compositions, but he provides an inimitable and good-humored version. The live audience laughs at some points, as he proceeds from verse to verse in this satirical piece.
"Where Have All the Flowers Gone" is one of his best-known compositions. This classical political sung is well sung; he takes it at a slow pace, and this adds a degree of power to the work.
One of my personal Seeger favorites. . . . "Turn, Turn, Turn" uses language from the Biblical book, "Ecclesiastes." As so often, he uses those words to make some political points. As usual, his simply singing and guitar playing is effective and the effect telling.
"Which Side Are You on" is an old union song. It was someone else's composition, but Seeger makes it his own; the audience sing-along is attractive.
Then, there is "We Shall Overcome." This civil rights anthem is eloquently sung by Seeger.
Four songs were added to the original album, with two of the best addenda being "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" and the redoubtable and enchanting "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore."
Wonderful! If one like Seeger, this is a good compilation to refresh your memories of his work. If you never really knew much about Seeger, this is a very nice introduction.

Editorial Reviews:

Pete Seeger's recording career covers more than 60 years, so a single-CD collection is bound to leave out more than a few worthy songs. But the 16 selections on Pete Seeger's Greatest Hits include indispensable Seeger-composed classics like "Turn! Turn! Turn!," "Bells of Rhymney," and an abbreviated a cappella version of "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" Also included are songs Seeger popularized, such as "Wimoweh," which he learned from Solomon Linda's original South African recording in the 1940s, and "Guantanamera," which he picked up from some children at a Catskills summer camp where he was singing. All of the performances are drawn from his 1960s tenure at Columbia Records--only the first 12 tracks were included on the original 1967 package--and include both studio and live recordings. This CD features only a small fraction of the songs that could legitimately be called Seeger's greatest hits, but because most of these selections are so important to his career, this set can be thought of as the greatest of his greatest hits. --Michael Simmons
