Summary: The Winner Takes It All - The ABBA Story
Comment: ABBA from Sweden are the real kings and queens of rock & roll. The music of the 1970s became the music of the 1990s, and the ABBA revival was the tip of the spear. ABBA Gold went double platinum in the United States. More ABBA Gold and the box set, Thank You For The Music, sold. Classics like Dancing Queen, Take A Chance On Me and Waterloo again rode the airwaves. ABBA books were published. VH1 featured ABBA The Movie.

ABBA sold 250 million records between 1972 and 1982. Nearly every country in the world bought ABBA. Only China, North Korea and Vietnam resisted. ABBA had nine number ones in Britain. Fernando to this day is the biggest selling record in the history of Australia's music business. The group toured the United States in 1979 and Japan in 1980.

There was distribution of labor in ABBA. Each member had his or her niche. Each brought something to the group which the others could not. Agnetha was the blonde who sang high. Frida was the brunette who sang low. Benny was the pianist who composed the music. Bjorn was the rhythm guitarist with a knack for lyrics. On stage, the ladies were beautiful bookends.

ABBA's music is great because of the way it combines classical with rock & roll. The lyrics are autobiographical from the female point of view. They reflect the lives of Agnetha and Frida even though they were written by Bjorn.

Pop music went to the city in the 1970s, and ABBA songs are the city incarnate. They typify the young, urban female working office jobs and looking for love.

ABBA continued the depolarization of the sexes which began with Elvis Presley. Although Elvis was in the Army and served his country, he was no General MacArthur.

If Elvis was a teddy bear, The Beatles were four teddy bears. The Beatles showed that men could be sensitive to issues and even grow their hair.

ABBA spotlighted the women, a fitting gesture since the 1970s was a decade of women's liberation.

ABBA took rock & roll to the European continent and performed it in five languages as disco became the music of the women's decade. ABBA originated disco.

ABBA recorded 110 songs in English in 10 years. Their music is art. It has literary, poetic and dramatic qualities which exist nowhere else in pop music. Each song is like a little play or a painting hanging in a gallery. Their work appeals to all ages.

ABBA pioneered rock video, and their clips were ultimately available in compilations.

The ABBA solo period of the 1980s saw Agnetha produce three albums. Frida did two.

Benny and Bjorn entered the theater with Chess and, in the '90s, produced Kristina fran Duvemala, a musical about Swedish emigrants. Mamma Mia! rose from the revival.

Just as ABBA followed Elvis and The Beatles, their legacy is apparent in the music of Shania Twain. ABBA has been eligible for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame since 1999.

Summary: ABBA nut loves it
Comment: I have been an avid ABBA fan for 30 years. This DVD was really great in the way it told the story of ABBA from the very beginning. I loved the way Bennie and Bjorn talked about the deevelopment of a lot of their big hit songs. It is a must for for all ABBA fans.

Summary: This was the ABBA story...
Comment: This DVD was rather good. I enjoyed hearing about how ABBA started and what lead them to each other. I didn't mind all the Mama Mia segments because it was very interesting to learn how they remastered all the songs for the musical. It was also enjoyable to see the early clips of everyone. It would have been nice to hear more about the group than see portions of their videos. The video portions were too long.

I also purchased the videos in an Amazon package deal. It was worth it.

Editorial Reviews:

The Winner Takes It All: The Abba Story reflects the peaks and valleys of the Swedish supergroup's popularity over the decades, as well as the quartet's turbulent years together. The documentary successfully manages to piece together both the group's public and private sides through the use of interview excerpts and video footage, and it also contains exclusive interviews with all four members of Abba for the first time since their split. Reflecting on the intricate nature of their music, as well as the elevation of their compositions to the heady heights of pop classics, the documentary concludes with behind-the-scenes footage of preparations for the Abba-inspired stage show Mamma Mia! This is a must for all Abba fans, as well as those wishing to discover the heritage of one of the world's greatest pop groups. --John Galilee
