Summary: grew up on gordon
Comment: I grew up listening to gordon lightfoot. my father taught himself to play guitar and sing by playing and singing gordon lightfoot songs. I know almost every single song he ever recorded, and love all of them. this CD is one of my favorites, and I have it on my ipod and listen to it quite often. I am 22 years old, born in 1985 and I am a huge gordon lightfoot fan. my sister and I will listen to it over and over perfectly content- she is a year and a half older than me. I may be one of his youngest fans, but I love him!

Summary: The best of Gordon
Comment: In a word, the music of Gordon Lightfoot is nostalgic. Songs like If You Could Read My Mind make you think of the seemingly perfect relationship you once had which somehow didn't quite work out.

His music defies any easy categorization. The best way to describe it would be to say his songs are a hybrid of very light rock, country & folk songs. Does not sound like a winning combination, but it certainly works for Lightfoot!

His songs are saturated with pastoral scenes of countrysides, trains, rivers and boats. His music frequently makes me think of the late Autumn when the leaves are turning and the temperature is dropping (especially Restless).

The gem of his songs is his stirring requiem, The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald. Being a Michigander, they play the song on the radio every November 10th to commemorate the loss of the freighter on Lake Superior. No matter what type of music you like, you can't help but feel the hair stick up on the back of your neck whenever you hear him strum that sad tune.

If you like Gordon Lightfoot at all, this album is a "must have" as it really does include all of his very best songs. If you're unfamiliar w/Lightfoot, then this is a terrific place to start!

Summary: You need to go deeper than this
Comment: The 5 stars are obligatory - after all this is a collection of great songs by one of the greatest artists of the last 50 years. But if you really love Gordon's music, or are thinking of buying this for someone who does, this is NOT the package for you. You must dig deeper. He's been too good for too long to settle for a greatest hits collection. (Besides, how will you know if they're really the greatest until you've heard the others?) My recommendation would be to buy the following: 1) "The United Artists Collection" - a 2-disk set including his complete first four albums from 1966-1968, before he achieved stardom outside Canada; 2) If You Could Read My Mind (1970); 3) Don Quixote (1972); 4) Sundown (1973); 5) Shadows (1982) and 6) Harmony (2004). Each of these includes numerous songs that qualify as "greatest" but are not included here. This list still leaves a lot on the table (notably his most famous song, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"), but you'll be off to a great start. Just decide right now that this is one artist who deserves a little more of your time and money to be fully appreciated.

Editorial Reviews:

Though he rose from the ranks of journeyman '60s folksinger to become a potent and consistent '70s hit maker, Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot's stock in trade was as much hard-eyed, dispassionate observation as romance or poetic whimsy. Perhaps that's why his songs have been covered by everyone from Elvis (this set's "Early Morning Rain") to Dylan. If there's such a thing as an alpha-male folkie, Lightfoot certainly fits the bill. Spanning the tongue-in-cheek chauvinism of 1965's "For Lovin' Me" and the cheatin' ways of "Sundown" to more introspective fare like "If You Could Read My Mind" and "Beautiful," this 20-track collection presents a concise primer on Lightfoot's career and craft. After his career peaked with one of the most unlikely top five hits ever, the gloom-laden 1976 narrative "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," Lightfoot's production tailed off sharply, though this anthology's "Stay Loose" ('86) and "Restless" ('93) are testament to his enduring skills as a songwriter and performer. --Jerry McCulley
