Spotlight customer reviews: Customer Rating: Summary: AMAZING! Comment: This is the album that transformed George Strait from a country music superstar to a country music legend. This is far and away his best album ever and one of the best albums ever recorded by anyone in any genre. Every song on here could be a #1 hit. This CD got so much play by me I had to buy a second copy because I scratched the first one moving it from CD player to CD player. I can't recommend this CD enough. Customer Rating: Summary: HIS REAL BEST EVER Comment: For all you George Strait fans......this "ROAD LESS TRAVELED" is really his best.TRUBADOR is up there...but this is a work of cowboy genius. Evidently, the "Road Less Traveled" was a famous self help book in the 60's used by rehab centers to treat AA. This is the best place to start, if your new to the G.Strait world. songs like RUN...STARS ON THE WATER...LIVING WELL were such huge mega-hits that for awhile we all thought he was going to waltz off with the whole world. THIS IS A SIX STAR RECORD. Customer Rating: Summary: Yummy Spanish Guitar Comment: This is my single most favorite George CD. Run is a classic already, and is one of my all-time favorites. Scratch that. It is. From the lucious, sexy, spanish guitar, the lyrics are simple, but amazingly sing-able and nice. He also remakes Stars on the water, the upbeat catchy tune that makes you think of country dancehalls. It also includes the hit she'll leave you with a smile. With Good time charleys , and my life's been grand it's a throw back to old country, and original strait tunes, fused with his newer, latest catchy one-liner tunes. It's the best of both worlds, no matter which George you're in love with. Customer Rating: Summary: Here we go again.... Comment: I never used to like arguing with other reviewers, but I find that it is becoming increasingly necessary to do so. Some people will write reviews without know fully what they are talking about. Someone has previously commented on how Mr. Strait doesnt write any songs. A-hem! George Strait is a Cowboy. He runs a ranch. He raises a family. He rides and Ropes. He Rodeos. He does it all. If you think you can live the life that King George does, and still write music for an album every single year (except '95), then be my guest. Id love to see anyone do it. No way pal. Wont Happen. This is a real Cowboy here. Not just a singer with a cowboy hat on. Now as far as the music on this disc goes... The title says it all. This is somewhat of a departure from the classic country sound we are used to from GS, but that doesnt take anything away from the music at all. A couple of tracks on here use a little bit of drum programming, and one uses a computer fed voice track. Thats pretty much it as far a non-traditional country goes. In fact, one of those songs with the programming is one of the best songs George has recorded in a while, and that's the title track itself. The mood is just breathtaking on this one. There are a couple hits on this one that we heard on the radio... "Run," and "Livin and livin well." Both great songs, and both very representive of the rest of the album. The tone is set off right from the start with "Run," and that carries the album. Its still real country, its still George Strait. This is one of those CDs that goes perfect with the artist. If you like George at all, you cant not like this CD. And for the price it is now, you cant go wrong. Give it a try, if you dont like it, sell it. You wont need to do the latter though. It is a wonderful representation of the living legend that is George Strait, and an all around great COUNTRY album. Customer Rating: Summary: Pretty Decent Album for a Guy Who Just Likes to put out Albums Comment: I mean he has an album out almost every year and doesn't have much to show for it. Oh well, I guess just like almost every other country artist, it's easy to put out an annual album when you don't write any of the music. Anyway, I like the openeing 3 songs which are kind of rockish and R&Bish. The first song is a good opener and has fairly good harmonies. Run is good as well and uses a drum machine for the verses which is a little rare in country. Stars on the water is fine and it has some digital voicing that works well. After the 1st three tracks I lose interest but it's a nice start. Strait has a lot of good stuff but his albums are hard to listen to. More Reviews
Editorial Reviews: The sunset motif on the cover of George Strait's 28th MCA album since 1981 hints at a more private, thoughtful ambiance. This is reflected in the title song, the introspective "The Middle of Nowhere," and the contented (if bland) domesticity of "Living and Living Well." Strait adds a smoking revival of Chip Taylor's rockabilly homage "The Real Thing," though the convivial remake of Del Reeves's 1969 honky-tonk hit "Good Time Charley's" didn't need the annoying overdubbed barroom sounds. As always, letting Strait be Strait is the key. When that doesn't happen and unsuitable material enters the mix, things quickly falter, as they do on his tepid version of Rodney Crowell's "Stars on the Water" and the formulaic "Don't Tell Me You're Not in Love." On the power ballad "Run," Strait's loose-limbed vocal style slams head-on into a ponderous, synthesizer-heavy arrangement with disastrous results. A few more like the album's closer, a superb interpretation of Merle Haggard's blissful "My Life's Been Grand," would have helped. --Rich Kienzle
