Summary: Just as I remember
Comment: I first heard this groundbreaking recording when it was first released and it turn me on to music of the baroque period. As an 8 year old piano student, I took it to my teacher and told her "I want to learn how to do THIS!" While she did not get the import of Wendy (then Walter) Carlos' work, she did help me learn some of the more accessible pieces and I went on to major in music. This recording was one of the factors in my learning to love music.

The CD is every bit as warm as the vinyl I wore out years ago. beautifully rendered, these treatments of Bach's work are heartful and artistic. A magnum opus to be certain.

Summary: Great re-invention of Bach in the 20th Century
Comment: Wendy Carlos' album was ahead of its time, and is still listenable today. Those familiar with the score from Tron will recognize Wendy's style immediately. Highly recommended both for the fans of Bach and the progressive rockers who like hearing classical music updated for "our generation."

The updated version of the album features a final track spoken by Wendy herself on what items never made it to the album, what worked and why, etc. Interesting to hear her voice after all these years!

Summary: A timeless classic
Comment: As so many before have commented, I grew up on this LP from the early 60's. Coming from a "classical music" family, it is somewhat surprising that it was in our collection which used to only fit into the storage space of the Magnovox stereo console (if you remember those) - a stereo designed to be a turntable with speakers that looked like a single piece of furniture.

We never really sat and listened to it, we solely cleaned house to it like Tazmanian Devils. It was really quite motivating. I don't play it nearly as much today as we did then but when I do, I find myself uncontrollably dusting or washing windows. And while I do these things, I find myself paying close attention to the music, which is unique in every sense of the word. Then before I realize it, the CD is over and I have cleaned my entire living room and kitchen house without a grudge.

Wendy Carlos and her Moog synthesizer have produced a sound from Bach which will always bring us home. My father always said that Bach was probably rolling in his grave but that didn't stop dad from playing it. And I'm not sure that I agree with that statement. It is a wonderful way to introduce Bach to many audiences. It has stood up to the course of time. I'm not at all ashamed to have in in my classical music library. I give it a 4 star only because, given the option, I will always prefer the none-electric approach when listening to classical music.

Summary: Perfect Product
Comment: This is exactly what I was looking for. It was easy to find, easy to order, and arrived in reasonable time. The CD was in perfect condition and played great right out of the box. I couldn't ask for anything better if I had gone to the store and bought it myself off the shelf. What more can I say?!! If you enjoy classical music, and are looking for a different twist on how it is presented, then you will love the sound of Bach as presented with the MOOG Synthesizer. This is truly a rare treat and you won't be sorry. If you're like me you will be searching for all types of music that has been reproduced using the synthesizer. Enjoy!!

Summary: Timeless Bach
Comment: One of the classic recordings of the 60s, Switched-On Bach proves that, not only is Bach's music timeless, so is this treatment of his music. Today's technology may be much more advanced, but you will not find a sound as fresh and exciting as Wendy Carlos' pioneer work anywhere else.

Editorial Reviews:

Wendy Carlos's Switched-On Bach is one of those rare novelty recordings that never gets boring. In the capable hands of Carlos, Bach's keyboard masterpieces sound like they were made for the otherworldly blurps, farts, and chimes of a Moog synthesizer. And, in a sense, they were. Bach's inventive music doesn't lose any of it's contrapuntal punch in these complicated arrangements and, novelties aside, the playing is great on this Grammy Award-winning classic. Whether performing Bach's "Two-Part Inventions," "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring," or "Wachet Auf," Carlos offers one-of-a-kind interpretations, her synthesizers still sounding as otherworldly as they did in 1968. This is one of those weird and wonderful classical releases that anyone--classical scholar or pop enthusiast--can enjoy. A Switched-On box set exists, capturing most of Carlos's baroque-gone-berserk output, but this is the disc that started it all. In a word, fun. --Jason Verlinde
