Customer Rating: Summary: Blues-y Rock *n* Roll! Comment: I first heard of the group Cold Blood on a compilation cd box set called What It Is! Funky Soul And Rare Grooves (1967-1977) on a song called "When I'm Kissing My Love." That song blew me away and I just had to find out more about this group.
That exploration led me to this cd COLD BLOOD/SISYPHUS and I'm not disappointed.
"Cold Blood" released in 1969 and Sisyphus in 1971, blended the elements of rock, soul, and gospel into a fiery sound that sounds as good today--as I'm sure it did back then.
The San Franscico Bay area group was fronted by singing dynamo Lydia Pense, who sounds a lot like Janis Joplin, and the icy hot blend of vocals and music makes me want to testify(scream and shout).
If you like 60s-early 70s type rock music, think hippie/counter culture generation, you'll love COLD BLOOD/SISYPHUS. It's that good.
Customer Rating: Summary: Not as good as First Taste of Sin Comment: This is Cold Blood without Donny Hathaway. It still has Lydia's powerful vocals, rockin' horn arrangements, but uneven performance. Very interesting if you're a Cold Blood fan and great if you just rip the songs you like. More of a raw, unpolished, live side of Cold Blood compared to First Taste of Sin.
Customer Rating: Summary: Good stuff Comment: In the caldron of the late 60's-early 70's music scene there were many very good bands that are largely forgotten today. Near the top of my list would be Cold Blood and this disc is a cheap way to get an idea what they were about.
Think BST or Chicago but grittier and bluesier with a powerhouse girl singer up front that will make you think of Janis Joplin on her better days.
I gave this one 4 stars but would give it a 4.8 if I could.
Customer Rating: Summary: THE JAPANESE RELEASES HAVE BETTER AUDIO MASTERING Comment: In 2006, the first five CB titles were issued in Japan in LP-replica mini-sleeve CD format on the Bomba label:
COLD BLOOD - BOMBA BOM24086
SISYPHUS - BOMBA BOM24087
FIRST TASTE OF SIN - BOMBA BOM24088
THRILLER - BOMBA BOM24091
LYDIA - BOMBA BOM24092
The audio mastering on those discs are all superior to their Collectables/domestic counterparts.
If you really love these CB albums, get the Japanese releases before they are sold out, as all mini-sleeve CD's are limited edition.
They are certainly more expensive than the domestic CB titles, but are definitely worth the price.
Link to the Japanese remaster of Sisyphus.
WHAT IS A JAPAN "MINI-LP-SLEEVE" CD?
Have you ever lamented the loss of one of the 20th Century's great art forms, the 12" vinyl LP jacket? Then "mini-LP-sleeve" CD's may be for you.
Mini-sleeve CDs are manufactured in Japan under license. The disc is packaged inside a 13.5MM X 13.5MM cardboard-sleeve, precision-miniature replica of the original classic vinyl-LP album. Also, everything else packaged with the original LP is precisely replicated and included, such as gatefolds, booklets, lyric sheets, posters, printed LP sleeves, stickers, embosses, special LP cover paper/inks/textures and die cuts. An English-language lyric sheet is also included, even if the original LP did not have printed lyrics.
Then, there's the sonic quality: Often (but not always), mini-sleeves have Japan-dedicated remastering (20-Bit, 24-Bit, DSD, K2 or K2HD, and/or HDCD), and can often (but not always) be superior to the audio on the same title anywhere else in the world. There also may be bonus tracks unavailable elsewhere.
Each Japan mini-sleeve has an "OBI" ("oh-bee"), a Japan-language promotional strip. The OBI often also lists the original album's release date, the Japan street date of that particular disc, the catalog number, and mastering info. Bonus tracks are always only listed on the OBI, maintaining the integrity of the original LP artwork.
The enthusiasm of mini-sleeve collecting must be tempered, however, with avoiding fake copies of Japan `sleeves manufactured in Russia and distributed throughout the world, primarily on eBay. They are inferior in quality, worthless in collectable value, a total waste of money, and should be avoided at all costs.
Also, there are older Japan mini-sleeve releases that have been supplanted with newer ones, usually with updated audio (such as JVC-Japan replacing older K2-mastered titles with new K2HD mastered releases).
All mini-sleeve releases are limited edition, but re-pressings/re-issues are becoming more common with some of the Japanese companies (but, again, not always). Mini-sleeve collecting can get expensive quickly, so, if you're a novice, it is highly advisable to seek the advice of an experienced `sleeve collector!
Customer Rating: Summary: Still underrated..... Comment: Cold Blood was one of the finest blues/funk bands of their era. The music remains timeless. Fronted by Lydia Pense, the little woman with the big voice, this was a band with outstanding musical skills. Whether Cold Blood was performing original music or bringing a whole new meaning to a vast array of cover songs, their sound was unique and unmistakable. Apparently Cold Blood still exists, though with many personnel changes and a long-promised album that has not yet materialized.
The Cold Blood catalog deserves revisiting, and this cd of their early work is a gem.

Editorial Reviews:
|
Cold Blood was a San Francisco-based Rock/R&B band that performed in the style of their contemporaries Chicago and Blood Sweat & Tears. Music impresario Bill Graham was so impressed with the group when they played his Fillmore West in 1969, he signed them to his record label. Highlights on this Collectables 2-for-1 collection include 'I Wish I Knew Hot It Would Feel To Be Free' and two tunes by Isaac Hayes and David Porter.
